Pedestrian Safety Campaign Underway
Prince George, B.C. – On average, 90 pedestrians are injured and four killed by motor vehicles in Northern B.C. every year.(infographic at right, courtesy ICBC)
In an effort to reduce those numbers, ICBC is launching its annual pedestrian safety campaign .
Pedestrian/ vehicle crashes are most likely to happen from November to January, as the weather changes and daylight hours decrease.
Top contributing factors attributed to drivers in such collisions are:
- distracted driving
- failure to yield the right of way to pedestrians,
- weather.
“Regardless of who is legally in the right in cases where a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, it’s always the pedestrian who suffers the most catastrophic consequences,” says Dr. Kelly Barnard, director of medical unit, B.C. Coroners Service.
Pedestrians can help stay safe by making eye contact with the driver of a vehicle, wearing bright and reflective clothing, and staying focused on the road.

How bout a law for pedestrians to put away their cell phone when crossing a street? LOL
Yeah, distracted walking. I can see it now. Maybe impaired walking too. Oh, that one’s already there, drunk in public.
How about some street lighting. It seems to be a common thread to all of these pedestrians getting run over.
Reading these types of stories I always wonder when we will finally see some sidewalks and street lighting to the Hart.
