Cougars Hit the Road

Thursday, October 22, 2015 @ 3:47 AM

Prince George, B.C.-The Prince George Cougars will be hitting the road feeling pretty good about what has transpired so far this week.

24 hours removed from a 5-2 win Tuesday against Calgary, the Cougars followed that up with a 5-0 shutout victory over the same Calgary squad. Mack Shields turned aside all 23 shots he faced to earn his sixth career shutout and Jesse Gabrielle, Brogan O’Brien and Joe Carvalho each recorded two points in the victory.

After the first 20 minutes the Cougars had a 3-0 lead and two of their three markers came while down a man. Jesse Gabrielle and Brogan O’Brien teamed up for a shorthanded tally at the 11:01 mark of the first while on a two-on-one to give the Cougars the lead. For Gabrielle it was his team high seventh of the season and his second shorthanded goal of the season.

Shane Collins then increased the Cougars lead to 2-0 when his point shot found its way through traffic and past Lasse Petersen for his first of the season. The Collins goal was assisted by Jansen Harkins and Chase WItala and came with a delayed penalty on the way to Calgary.

The Cougars continued to get into penalty trouble though in the later stages of the period, yet once again they were able to bury one while shorthanded. Once again it was Jesse Gabrielle supplying a spark for his team when he picked off a Calgary defender, skated into the slot and snuck a shot past Petersen and in for his second goal of the game and eighth of the year.  That goal came at 17:31 of the first.

Kyle Dumba relieved Lasse Petersen in the Calgary net to start the second period and was tested early and often but kept denying the Cougar scoring chances. Calgary then caught a big break when Elliott Peterson dropped the gloves with Jesse Gabrielle at the 6:50 mark of the second. Gabrielle scored the quick victory in the fight, but both he and Peterson were ejected from the game meaning the Cougars leading goal scorer was done for the night. It wouldn’t matter on this night.

Brogan O’Brien made it 4-0 for the Cougars with a beautiful backhand breakway goal at the 17:52 mark of the second and the Cougars went into the second intermission up by four and were outshooting Calgary 20-18.

The game’s final goal came 2:32 into the third when Jared Bethune knocked home a Tate Olson rebound that bounced to him off the back boards behind the Calgary goal. For Bethune it was his second goal of the season.

From there, Mack Shields did the rest. He stopped the five shots he faced in the final stanza and the Cougars peppered the Calgary goal with 17 shots of their own in what proved to be a 5-0 shutout victory for the home side.

For a second straight game, Mack Shields was strong in goal against his former club. His best saves came late in the third period when Calgary did their best to end his shutout bid. The Cougars outshot Calgary 37-23 in the end and their penalty kill went a perfect five-for-five with two shorthanded goals.

With the win the Cougars improve to 5-4 and will now hit the road for four straight games, all against B.C. Division foes. The Cougars next game goes Friday night in Kelowna against the Rockets.
