Literacy Champion Receives Award
Prince George, B.C.- She has been called a “Literacy Hero” and today, Helen Domshy received the special award that was announced in September.
Domshy is the coordinator for Prince George’s Literacy Outreach, and is the recipient of the 2015 Council of the Federation Literacy Award for B.C.
Through the plain and clear language workshops, creating programs for learners that are relevant to this region, and coordinating training for volunteer tutors, she has worked tirelessly to improve literacy levels in the community.
It was most appropriate that the presentation by local MLAs Shirley Bond and Mike Morris, took place the Prince George Public Library. Domshy was presented with a certificate signed by the Premier, a medallion , and a cheque for $300 dollars .
“I am delighted and honored to receive this award,” said Domshy . “Literacy is not a luxury, but a right. To develop a healthy economy, citizens need to acquire a strong literacy foundation. Literacy also brings increased life satisfactions as it impacts on every aspect of our lives. Thank you to the Prince George community for recognising this fact and developing partnerships to develop and support our citizens.”
Literacy skills are fundamental to success in life, said MLA Mike Morris “By helping people develop strong literacy skills, Helen has helped opens other doors for people in our community.”
“The ability to read and communicate well are skills that many of us take for granted” said MLA Shirley Bond, “I’m so glad to see Helen recognized for her hard work and for being a difference maker. Thank you Helen, for your dedicated service to our community and region.”
