Pedestrian Safety at 4th and Vancouver

Prince George, B.C. – With reflectors in hand, volunteers for Community Policing and ICBC were at the corner of 4th and Vancouver Streets to help improve pedestrian safety.“There have been major changes to this (4th Avenue) road over the past couple of years, with the road now open to two way traffic” says Corporal Craig Douglass of the Prince George RCMP. “It takes time for people to change their driving habits, and this four way stop is not always recognized by drivers heading into the downtown core.” That poses a serious risk for pedestrians. Cpl. Douglass says there have been a few “near misses” at the intersection as some drivers “blow right through”.
The City is going to add some “stop ahead” signs for the east bound traffic, to remind drivers there is a 4 way stop coming up.
In the meantime , ICBC ‘s Diane Pozer says no matter where they cross the roads, all pedestrians should be taking extra care , as the reduced daylight during this time of the year puts pedestrians at risk. She advises pedestrians;
- wear reflective clothing,
- use flashlights, or other personal safety lights,
- cross at marked and well lit intersections,
- make eye contact with drivers before entering the intersection, and
- make sure your pets are visible by adding reflectors, or lights to their collars

That 4 way stop at 4th and Vancouver has to be the most poorly thought out intersections I’ve seen in a while. People park damn near right at the stop signs making right turns a bit of a pain. You have to pull out into the intersection to see if there is a pedestrian because the parked cars are blocking the view.
you know another area that is a pee on is the Carter Light Industrial. Since the College implemented the paid parking. All the streets are filled with vehicles parking by the sidewalks. All the business’s have to deal with that crap. CNC was irresponsible by downloading this to the business’s
Pain in the butt looking around the corners.
