Prince George, B.C. – El Nino is to thank for the recent spell of warm weather we’ve been experiencing.
That from Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist.
“We had that cold spell the beginning of December and now we’re kicking into more of what we’d expect with El Nino, and this is generally a mild pattern” he says.
“And there’s another piece to it too though and that is we have a number of systems heading at us from the west which is typically what happens during El Nino.”
Lundquist says if things continue to warm up today the record high of 6 degrees set in 1990 will fall.
“Yes, absolutely. We’re looking at a high of nine degrees in Prince George. I’m not entirely sure but lets watch that thermometer and see if we can do it.”
He say the warm weather will continue through tomorrow with an expected high of seven before dropping to the one to three degree range mid-week.
“And that’s still above average. Our average high for this time of year is minus two,” says Lundquist.
“But Friday and Saturday a cold front is forecast to move through and we might have a high of minus six and that would be a little lower than average but still not that cold for this time of year.”
