Mail Box Thieves Sought
Prince George, B.C.- RCMP in Prince George are hoping the public can help them identify the persons responsible for breaking into 5 rural community mailboxes over the weekend.
“Each mail box has 40 compartments, and a parcel box, and all were broken into” says Prince George RCMP Media Liaison Officer Corporal Craig Douglass.
Two of the rural boxes were broken into in the Buckhorn area, two more were hit on 15 Mile Road, and one was hit at Mud River.
Police believe all five break ins are the work of the same person or persons.
The only silver lining is that there has been no mail delivery since last Thursday, so those who had picked up their mail Thursday are not at risk of having lost any important letters or parcels.
Police believe the break ins happened late Saturday night ,or in the early hours of Sunday. They are hoping anyone who may have seen suspicious activity to contact the Prince George Detachment of the RCMP at (250)561-3300 or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1(800)222-8477, online at www.pgcrimestoppers.bc.ca (English only), or Text-A-Tip to CRIMES (274637) using keyword “pgtips”.

Super Boxes.. making it easier for thieves… great idea.

I’ve had community mail boxes for over 40 years now. It’s not the boxes that are the problem, it’s the lack of consequences for the thieves.
“Each mail box has 40 compartments, and a parcel box, and all were broken into”
41 x 5= 205.
Therefore, 205 weeks in a very uncomfortable jail.
(O.k., I know that finding an uncomfortable jail will be impossible, of course).
Finger chopping time.
I had to get my mail from one of those super boxes 15 years ago and the post office was repairing them almost weekly not sure why they thought things would change…
Yes, a lot safer to have mail in an unlocked box on your driveway or house
Its the lack of information and the consequences of breaking Federal laws that are at fault here. At one time everyone knew that you would be I serious trouble if you tampered with the mail. Not so sure this applies anymore.
If you do not have any meaningful consequences for committing crimes, then people will commit them with impunity. We need only to look at the consequences of shop lifting to see that people shop lift all the time knowing that at the worst they will be banned from the store. Hmmmm.
Losses by the commercial outlets to shop lifting is covered to some extent by insurance, and of course insurance rates go up to cover the cost of shoplifting. So in fact, we the taxpayers are penalized as a result of the actions of the law breakers. Hmmm.
In this day and age of electronics you tell me we can’t do something….lets do a bait box…break into and a safe but huge mess die pack goes off…try washing that off little bast….s
I like your idea, prov2, excellent!
The trigger mechanism could be set to disengage when the master key is used to open the main doors.
I suppose that Canada Post could be sued for damages if a poor innocent thief were to get paint/dye in their eyes.
Our rural “super” mailboxes were broken into back in early November, it took Canada Post 5 weeks to replace them with their latest model, a different design that appears as if it will take a few minutes longer to crack, compared to the old ones.
