Province to test Saturday opening of Service BC office in P.G.

Friday, January 1, 2016 @ 3:59 AM

Prince George, BC. – It’s a pilot project,  but  if  there is demand,  it could  become the norm.

Recognizing that  not everyone can  make it to the  Service BC office  at 1044 5th Avenue during its  Monday to Friday  8:30 to 4:30 operating hours,  the Prince George office will  start the new year offering Saturday service.

As of January 9th,   Service BC   in Prince George will offer expanded hours  operating  8:30 to 4:30 on Saturdays,  but,  you will have to make an appointment.  To make an appointment,  call 250 565-4488 but keep in mind the office closes for lunch between noon and 1.

“It can be difficult to break away from work and other obligations during the week” says MLA Shirley Bond, “Providing appointments on Saturdays will offer busy residents greater access to the government services they need.”

Once this pilot ends, depending on user demand, it is possible the expanded hours will be made permanent in Prince George and extended to Service BC locations in other communities across the province.

Sounds like a good idea.

Great idea. Might be the busiest day of the week for them. I would also suggest they increase the hours from 7:30am to 6pm as well, and then have the employees on a 3-day,10-hours a day work week. The staffing costs wouldn’t increase all that much, but the flexibility for available staff would ensure no disruptions with service.

Existing employees could make up the 25% cut in pay due to less hours worked by working elsewhere on some of the other 4-days off each week.

Or is the plan to pay the workers overtime for the Saturdays worked?

Considering people are being turned away all the time because it’s 430… they finally come to conclusion they need better hours??? Even if open till 6 pm, would greatly help

Yes this will help but I can just imagine trying to get through on the phone to make an appointment for Sat. What’s wrong with running two shifts Monday to Friday and Tuesday to Sat. You will have people showing up at the door that don’t have an appointment only to be turned away.

We are sorry due to high volume of traffic, your wait time is 45 minutes so please leave a call back number.

Holy Cow, a government office offering extended hours for the convenience of its ‘customers’?
I nearly became overcome with joy, if not complete astonishment, until the truth revealed its self.
Phone to make an appointment, yeah thanks a lot. I too expect that that process will not be seamless.

What the heck! Why not make Saturday a regular business day?
I’m sure that many people would find that a great convenience.

On the bright side, this is a good start, maybe it will evolve.

Thank you to those responsible for progressive thinking in this matter.
