Friday Free For All – Jan. 29, 2016

Friday, January 29, 2016 @ 12:00 AM

Hard to believe, but January is  almost behind us!

It is the end of the week, and that can only mean one thing.  It is time for the Friday Free for All.

You know the rules,   you pick the topic, keep the comments brief,  and obey the three simple rules:

Keep it Clean

Keep it Legal

No Bullying.

Happy Friday to all. Let’s make it a safe weekend.
metalman.

Why do people on snowmobiles think that posted private property does not apply to them. Private is just that private. Not a place truspass all over for your enjoyment at a cost to others. Its getting dam frustrating trying to catch them in the act. let me go over to their place and drive a tractor around their yard and see what kind of response I get. More time and money on my part next year puting in gates. In a effort to keep out people who have no respect for others.

Yes indeed, a happy and safe weekend to everyone.

I’m with you ‘Old soon’. Better yet, drive that tractor all over their skidoos!
For farmers who have seeded for the next spring, riding snowmobiles over the field allows frost to get down and kill the crop. Losses from this are substantial.
For someone who caretakes a large acreage that is fairly remote, this is a problem too. Quads and snowmobiles trespassing on well-posted land, stealing whatever they can find.
I guess the only real solution is to place booby traps with signs posted to the fact. If you can cause damage to their machines away out there, it may discourage them from returning.
It is the same mentality that people have, who drive their machines illegaly on public roads with no regard for the laws.
I guess more and more people are regarding laws as suggestions rather than actual rules that must be followed for everyone’s safety and respect.
Its a sad thing to see.

Comments closed yesterday on the brew pub article before I could post. People were discussing what car dealership was there waaay back in the day. My father in law worked there, it was Ken Mills Chevrolet Oldsmobile Ltd. Think it went to Chrysler after that. I have an original poster pic on my phone with all the staff pics on it

Hear! Hear!

A few years back, I stopped some guy who was doing donuts on my front yard and politely asked him to please stop riding on my yard. He looked at me and said, “I’m not doing any harm.” He didn’t come back but I was appalled by his sense of entitlement.

Someone please find out who the oldtimer was who was beaten in his appt the other day. I would like to send him some money but do not know how. I am hoping a bank can setup a fund for people to contribute to.

Had a snowmobiler running up and down the alley the other night. Not only is this not safe, and illegal, it is also loud and irritating. Seems some people are unable to understand the consequences of their actions.

Seems to me that Shields Motors was the garage across from City Hall (North West Corner) between sixth and seventh, and Prince George Motors was on the East side of George St. between 6th and 7th where the new brewery is going to locate. This of course would be back in the late fifties or early sixties, so some people would not be aware of it.

We also had a garage called West End Motors, that was located on the South West side of Third Avenue and Victoria St., around the same time.

The School District says it needs to make money by charging for bussing (after they closed a bunch of rural schools). They say they don’t know where else the money would come from. Maybe they should think about discontinuing Elementary Vice Principal positions. Those positions were eliminated several years ago as a cost saving measure and then were reinstated, with even more positions added, over time. Make cuts at the administrative end where the cuts can be made. Stop trying to fool yourselves and the public.

There is a Initiative going on by the people , for the people to save the ROLL A DOME. Some people drive past the Dome and think what a eye sore , but for the people that use it think its the most beautiful place on earth, and it is well used. The building is structurally sound and has lots of potential. The City needs to buy it and turn it into a Big Community Centre . The City can sell the property down town that they plan to turn into a park that nobody will use or wants . The plan is to build a hotel on the property , maybe their is room for both. The City needs to get involved and listen to the people.

About 25 Years ago drove the Company Truck in the Ditch to avoid a Head On with a Kid on a Snowmobile on our Rural Road and what did his Father say, he shrugged it off!
So many Mindless people on this Machines, Cars and Trucks will come out on top, so think about before you go out and break the Law on your Quad or Snowmobile !

Bitter:”but for the people that use it think its the most beautiful place on earth.”

They ought to apply for an official United Nations World Heritage Site designation if it really is the most beautiful place on earth. How did it manage to escape the attention of the UN officials? Make an application, perhaps that will save it from demolition!

BTW, I do not want the City to waste my tax dollars on that 1940s relic. It is time for it to go, including all the junk piled up around it!

Shields Chev Olds, was directly across from City Hall, Prince George Motors was where the Ramada is now.
The dealer located where the Brewery is going to locate was the Chrysler dealer owned by Mr. Rota, and Mr. Wetlaufer.

PrinceGeorge; Its not about the Junk , its about people. What do you want to replace it with ?? because its well used. People are trying to save it from demolition. I don’t want my tax dollars wasted on a Park down town that people will never use, the money the City is going waste on that project could go into the ROLL A DOME project. The relic has bones , good bones and like I said its about people .

What would you like the city to waste your tax dollars on? :)

When in doubt about old things, explore the Exploration Place web site and its many galleries of old photos.

Go here: milltowndowntown.com/imgindex.php?lang=en&tid=9&results=1

It should open up to a page with several photos on it. Click on the one dated 1951. It shows Bryant Motors – Standard oil and Dodge Desoto.

The description on the photo says: “This site, at the corner of George St. and 5th avenue is now occupied by a restaurant”.

A search of the PG digitized newspapers should get some info on its opening.

From the City of Prince George’s web site, it says this about Gordon Bryant, Mayor of the City in 1954/55: “Bryant was born in Nanaimo, and arrived in PG from Prince Rupert in 1945. Upon his arrival, Bryant opened a car dealership……. Bryant and his wife, Trudy, were critical influences involved in layout of the following popular shopping and residential areas: Plaza 400, the Highland Park Development, the Downtown Parkade, Pine Centre, Parkwood, the Hudson’s Bay Company Store.”

I hope that the new owners will verify that information to make sure it is accurate to the best of their ability and incorporate some of that information in the interior displays of the new business.

At times like this one has to wonder whatever happened to the Prince George Heritage Commission???

The city and UNBC push wood innovation and construction well the roll a dome is a great example being overlooked with its clear span construction.

Why the over look? Not prestigious enough?

I am a old relic; Its not about money , its not about junk, its about people all people from every walk of life , that use the Dome. There is a petition going on that has lots of signatures on it, so a lot of people agree with me.

From the digitized Prince George Citizen – Thursday, July 10, 1947 “Ultra Modern Garage Holds Lavish Opening”

Mayor Jack Nicholson formally opened Bryant Motors Ltd. ultra-modern garage on George Street at Fifth Avenue this forenoon with leaders of the automotive field in B.C. present at ceremonies befitting the finest establishment of its kind in the interior of B.C.

It establishes Prince George as a community having one of the leading garages of the province.

So, a community with a garage which leads the province and a mayor who inspired the naming of a famous actor to boot…… :-)

The dome is a barrel vault truss, I believe. I have not been in there for over a decade and do not remember the structural roof.

From the City PGMap it appears to span about 80 feet, certainly not over 100feet.

Wooden clear spans are typically called long spans if they are over 100 feet long. Nothing earth shattering about that width. Common in agricultural buildings, ice arenas, etc. In fact, there was a bid to construct the CN Centre using clear span wood trusses but they lost the award of the contract. That was before wood was the “in” thing. Of course KIN 1 rebuild also did not use wood for the main structure when it could easily have done so.

I think from the point of view of a reasonable example of a “heritage” building of some importance to this community, it would not survive the first cut.

From an aesthetic point of view, it is a butt-ugly building which is poorly maintained on top of that.

Any one know what going on up on Foothills by the dump? Other then keeping a couple of needless flag people employed? When I drove by it yesterday I saw a thin strip of trees that will probably blow over come the first strong wind but other then that, I’m perplexed.

Good finish to the week in the markets . Funny how MSM only stokes fear and loss . When the markets are up they are dead silent .

axman they are clearing for a Hydro powerline upgrade.

“From an aesthetic point of view, it is a butt-ugly building which is poorly maintained on top of that.”

Some new hotels are going up close to the busiest intersection north of the Lower Mainland. Can’t have butt-ugly buck the trend of modern architecture, ala Signature Sandman Inn. Time to let go. Hopefully it will be sold and the site properly developed. As for a replacement, one can urge City Hall to put it on the wish list together with the Performing Arts Centre which has already established some priority.

Thanks! That makes sense considering they’re also working on the substation on Chief Lake. I didn’t put 2 and 2 together. :)

Seems my post is not coping?

Copying, mind and fingers not interconnected. Tried to copy my post onto here but will not for some reason so will try typing directly.

What is with the GOT LICE sign by the YMCA????

Is there that much of a problem in P G with Lice…lol

We do not need another hotel, a replacement for the Dome would be the Performing Arts Centre , the Dome is used by hundreds of people the Arts Centre would be used by a select few and I do not think its established some priority. The Dome is not butt ugly, only in the eyes of some, it has the potential to become everything to everyone.

Am I being edited?????

I’m guessing the PAC is going in either beside City Hall on the old Norgate property or beside the Library. The foundation has already been poured under the guise of an alleged “hotel”…. :)

Bitter, I would suggest that you let those that are ready willing and able to invest their own money decide what the market in PG needs or doesn’t need.
However I suspect that no-one has really requested your opinion nor your permission.

NyteHawwk; I was born and raised in Prince George so I have invested a lot in this City and I am entitled to my opinion , its not all about money and the bottom line. I am so glad I live in a Country where there is freedom of speech.

So is an non consensus view on climate not allowed?

what’s up with that

for th 5000th time:-)

As it stands the roll a dome is blue blight on the corner. Maybe the answer is to turn it into another roadside attraction to keep Mr. PG company.

Install a snout and a curly tail and paint the place pink, finally search all the thrift shops in town for silk purses to fabricate ears. People will come from far and wide to see that it is actually possible to make a sow’s ear from a silk purse.

What do you mean by ” non concensus veiw “? Take heart seamutt . Peabody Energy is all green today . Still down 90% . kind of like the coal mine in the canary reverse but it’s not the renewable feedback loop , right ?

I suspect you posted a link and no one has gotten around to reviewing it yet. Or maybe Al Gore bought 250 news and you’re toast?

Two hours left and we are supposed to be on topic again . Well . I’d like to know who will be the first woman on our money ( other than Liz on the back side ) ( okay perspective ) it’s gonna happen , so , who ? Roberta Bondar ? She’s gone 28k kilometers per hour . First Canadian woman to go that fast !

I think the saying is make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. The Dome could be turned into something great. I wonder how the Hotels down town will do with nice NEW hotels building out west? I feel sorry for the old family business trying to survive down town . Just because some one or something is old , there can still be lots of life left.

Taken off of the city website : Next council meeting council will review the Prince George Regional Performing Arts Centre Society’s Proposed Regional Performing Arts Centre (PAC) Update

“City‐owned parcels have been kept available. Some purchase enquiries have been
received.”

What the dickens is going on with this city? Forget I asked..lol

Why is the city wasting taxpayer dollars if the pieces of city owned properties have had some interested parties for these properties?

The PAC sure has not done much for the city to retain these properties all these years!

Why have these properties not been sold? Is someone in another pocket all these years?? This is ridiculous to say the lease. Sell the property it would make for a good seniors home.

A little late to post this, but BC government is looking at putting in some more rest stops in the province and has a survey for where these should go… that closes today.

its at gov.bc.ca/ restareasurvey

you still have 52 minutes… ;)

Also I think Justin Trudeau really blew it announcing he is going to sign the TPP deal. That says loud and clear that he is just another globalist neocon with a generous side to appear more friendly to voters.

National democracy will become nothing more than a shadow of the globalist corpocracy that will govern for monopoly style global corporations. TPP will accelerate the mass extinction of our bio-sphere and the impoverishment of the middle class through destruction of free enterprise values. Taking down free enterprise through the global arbitrage of regulations and rules that protect a competitive local start up market, and taking down democracy through investor state resolution strong arming and intimidation of our democratic laws and regulation via the global bankster appointed judges.

If Trudeau signs TPP than he is showing his true colors and his true allegiance with globalist banksters.

Washington State Open Government Laws. They have had the requirement to train people since July 2014.

We need to get to that mindset and enforceable law in this community and this province.

atg.wa.gov/open-government-training

Public agencies must have a good command of these laws. Training is a key component in correctly implementing and complying with the laws. Training is an important risk management tool. Training can help establish a “culture of compliance” within an agency. Training can help avoid or reduce litigation and its costs. Violations of the open public records and meetings laws can result in penalties, as well as a breakdown in confidence in government.

Moving onto PG and open government here. Where are the properties being held for the PAC? Why are they being held? Should they be held? For how long should they be held. There is a PAC site analysis with several locations identified. Why was that not made public when that work was done? Why is it not made public now. The WIDIC occupies one of those sites now. The other site being held next to City Hall is a poor site. I know of no other site being held for a PAC. If there is another one, we ought to be told about it.

What can the site adjacent to City Hall be used for? Hotel? Pub? Parking lot? Farmers market (an attractive building). Who wants to buy it? Hopefully not anyone who has proposed developments which have never moved beyond the wishful thinking phase.

All those who walk the University Connector trail from the end of Foothills at 18th to Ginters please pick up your dogs’ poop along the trails. There are bags there for your use. The place is a mine field in the winter.

I think that site next to City Hall would be a great spot for a night club of some sort. One that is custom built to be a night club… maybe a ranch style country dance club sort of thing. Close to lots of restaurants, walking distance to all the downtown hotels, and who cares if its in the Cannaught Hill shadow from October until May.

City realestate has been sketchy for as far as I can remember. Seams clear with all that went on with the WDIC and Commonwealth that things are not above board there and people are operating with agenda’s of their own.
