School Bus Slides Off the Road
Prince George, B.C. – Emergency personnel were called Six Mile Lake Road east of Prince George this morning, where a school bus slid off the road.
In addition to the driver, there was one child on board the bus when it slid off the road around 8 this morning east of Giscome Road.
Neither the driver nor the student was injured.
The bus was bound for Blackburn elementary when the incident occurred. There are 6 other children on the Six Mile Lake Road who were waiting to get on the bus. School District 57 Superintendent Sharon Cairns says the winter “wait” policy kicked in, and the children returned . Their parents have either been contacted, or will be contacted to advise that the children will have to find another way to classes today.
Road conditions were said to be slick at the time of the incident.
YRB was also responding to the scene to ensure the road has since been sanded.

Anyone want to bet that YRB has sanded that spot to City Standards by now. Our roads in Miworth are so icy that walking is almost impossible. With such a good winter you would think there would be money for more sand??????
In my opinion, YRB has really dropped the ball this year. We have a luge for a road and they have not sanded yet. Very shotty service this year.
There probably is money for sand, but…..and this shouldn’t be construed as defending YRB …they can’t sand every mile of road in the district at the same time.
Apparently YRB is supposed to have a piece of equipment every mile and have the roads heavily sanded at all hours of the day too bad reality doesn’t match unrealistic expectations but then again most of the posters here are living in a fantasy world of perfection.
City streets were no picnic this morning either. Just ask the asshat in the jeep who blew through the stop sign to get in front of a line of cars only to do a couple of 360’s on the road.
“Neither the driver nor the student was injured.”
They were wearing their seatbelts.
glad all was safe
The roads are slippery, would driving to road conditions ever enter any ones mind?
The solution is simple—-sand. Do you have to sand every road that is slippery? Yes, as time permits. Our road was sanded this morning by a private contractor who is doing some work on his property and did not want to have an incident with his equipment. Yrb should come out and see what a difference it makes. There has been no sanding by Yrb today in our area and you still cannot walk on the road except where the contractor has sanded.
I am not trying to defend anyone here either, but many of the roads did not freeze until about 2am. You simply cannot sand everything in those 4hrs before the morning “rush” starts. In stating that, I must also point out that school bus route maintenance seems to be lacking this year. There has been days when I feared that my kids bus may end up in the ditch… or worse. Road maintenance could be better, and so can people’s driving!
You cannot sand earlier than the freeze, otherwise the sand is underneath the ice. Preventative salting or saltwater brine spraying is only effective when there is no rain (salt just washes away), or if they apply it at the moment it freezes.
I am glad to hear that nobody got hurt on the bus. We really cant expect perfect driving conditions all winter long. I am lucky that I wasnt in a big rush when I hit the icy roads this morning, even driving carefully it was a dicey ride on my road too.
Next year, I will be due for new winter tires and they will be studded. Winter is not over yet, be safe and dont be in a rush.
Excellent comment!
There is no such thing as school bus road maintenance. The only maintenance for roads is for the city buses. All else are complaint driven. Even bus drivers have to call into dispatch and have them call YRB or the city.

Always seems to be after the fact, doesn’t it?
The hwy’s around town at this very minute are a skating rink. No yellow flashing light equipped vehicles to be seen anywhere.
