Celebrate Prince George a Success says Mayor

Monday, February 15, 2016 @ 1:23 PM

Prince George, B.C. – The Celebrate Prince George Winter Festival is over, and Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall   is thrilled with the way it all turned out.

“It was a great party, a great celebration” says the Mayor.   While the celebrations officially wrapped up with a party in the Canada Games Plaza on Saturday,   there were some events under the umbrella of the festival which took place on Sunday.

The whole idea of the Festival was to bring back the spirit of the 2015 Canada Winter Games “It turned out better than I had thought it might” says Mayor Hall, “I had pretty high expectations and it went way above that.”

He says the buzz in the plaza on Saturday brought back memories “You could feel it, it was almost like it was Canada Winter Games all over again.”

This February Festival may not be a one shot deal says the Mayor “We would like to look at having it as a yearly event and tying it in some way to the 2015 Games, but I think it’s all part of the momentum we wanted to build and to just celebrate Prince George. It’s a good time of the year for it, it’s February and maybe it takes care of some of the winter blues.”

I kinda like the idea of a “Celebrate Prince George Winter Festival”. Not in memory of the Games, but a week long fest (outdoor concerts, fireworks, local food trucks and vendors, the idea of a skating trail through Ft George (LTN Park), and a whole winterfest activity week (promote our local ski/board, x-country areas and local arenas).
Our City is trying to adopt some change, let’s roll with it. We are starting (just barely) to breath some life back into this town. We bring in some great concerts and events, but not much entertainment for night life (the downtown attraction is attempting at making a slow come back (new pub, micro brewery some newer boutique shops and another new restaurant to be built and some really good existing locales too that could use more exposure). We need a glue to bond our community together and something to keep tourists coming to town.
I know the whole winterfest idea actually needs “winter” to be a hit, so I would propose moving the dates back to Jan in order to give it a chance. Most of all, my idea of a celebrate PG party would be to acknowledge all of this towns attributes. Not just the memory of the games.
Just my opinion, but look at our local OTL event. Huge local event, gives people a venue to get out and socialize.

What is the new restaurant to be built watchdog?
