Coast Hotel Workers Ratify New Contract

Wednesday, February 17, 2016 @ 10:37 AM

Prince George, B.C. – There’s labour peace once again at Coast Hotels in B.C., including here in Prince George.

This after workers voted nearly unanimously this week to ratify a new contract hammered out during mediation efforts in Vancouver last week.

Unite Here! Local 40 Prince George area steward Margaret Prieston says 231 workers voted in favour of the deal province wide with just one person opposed.

The new deal offers the workers slight increases in pay and benefits. The deal covers somewhere between 85 to 100 workers at the Coast Inn of the North along with employees in Nanaimo, Kelowna and Victoria.

Workers affected by the new contract include housekeepers, maintenance staff, servers and bartenders. They had been without a contract since last May.

Good news. Just one question. Did they get their retro. pay?

There is not always retroactive pay. The last 2 contracts that I got, there was no retroactive pay. That was agreed to by the union and the employer. I know of other unions in the same sector where I was working that also did not receive retro pay.

HAS—Yes this is a problem when Unions and employees don’t get their act together to have their contract settled before it expires or shortly after. companies will drag it out as long as they can and you will have a hard time to recover retro.

oldman1, it’s unreasonable and irresponsible to suggest that companies will drag it out as long as they can. Are you trying to paint all companies as the villain when it comes to contract negotiations?

There is more than enough evidence to suggest that there have been cases where it was the Union and NOT the Company that was being completely unreasonable AND unrealistic in their contract negotiations!

Labour negotiations are supposed to be a give and take!

So, what did the Coast workers give, and what did they take?

And, what did the Hotel give, and what did they take?

Having been through several labour contracts I can safely say that it really depends on the company and their agenda I’ve seen contracts settled fast and I’ve seen contract talks drag out for months.

There are companies that will intentional drag out negotiations as it be ideas them and I’ve seen them settle fast to keep running. A lot depends on the economy and it works both ways for both parties

Err be ideas=benefits them

Hart Guy–I am not saying all companies like to drag out contracts but I know that there are some that do. What I said was it is not wise to drag a contract out very long or you will most likely have a hard time to get retro. pay. By dragging out a contract you are sometimes creating an unhealthy atmosphere in the workplace for both employees and management, so that is why I said get the contract settled SAP. Loss of production can also be a problem.

A bit of confusion apparently as you did say “companies will drag it out as long as they can and you will have a hard time to recover retro.”

Glad that you cleared that up as we wouldn’t want to think that you had a mad-on for “companies”! ;-)

Like you do for “unions”! ;-)
