The Real Reason Behind State Dinner in Washington

Thursday, March 10, 2016 @ 3:45 AM

Editorial Cartoon by Graeme MacKay, The Hamilton Spectator – Wednesday March 9, 2016 Trudeau and Obama forging special relationship, White House says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is winning praise from the White House for his leadership on climate change ahead of this week's visit to Washington where that issue will be high on the agenda. In a call with reporters Tuesday morning, officials from President Barack Obama's administration also noted the personal relationship that is developing between the two leaders. Obama extended the invitation for a state visit and dinner, the first in 19 years for a Canadian prime minister, when he met Trudeau at the APEC summit late last year. The officials said Canada and the U.S. always have a close relationship, regardless of who occupies 24 Sussex Drive or 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, but they acknowledged Trudeau and Obama have a lot in common. Trudeau arrives in the U.S. capital Wednesday along with his wife Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau and a delegation that includes five cabinet members: Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna, Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion, International Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan and Fisheries Minister Hunter Tootoo. They will attend a lavish state dinner at the White House on Thursday night after a day of meetings in the Oval Office and at the State Department. The White House officials discussed the close bilateral relationship between the two countries in terms of trade and defence but they paid particular attention to how Canada and the U.S. are co-operating on the environment file and suggested there is a change in tone since Trudeau defeated former prime minister Stephen Harper in October. "Since Prime Minister Trudeau assumed office we have also had tremendous co-operation with Canada on climate and clean energy issues," said Roberta Jacobson, assistant secretary of state, bureau of Western Hemisphere affairs. Sure is nice to have Canada welcomed, and actually honored, in the US and on the world stage again. I hear this is the first time in 19 years a Canadian Prime Minister has been invited to a state dinner in Washington.

I sense a growing pride in our country, and in being Canadian… a welcome change from the dark decade our country endured. Sunny days people, sunny days!

We can only wonder if Obama will welcome Trudeau like LBJ welcomed Lester Pearson to the Texas White House. And whether Trudeau will respond the same way. Probably, but maybe not on the first visit. The Liberal Party always has been the Party of grovelers. Ashamed of what we were and who we are. And to ever stand up for this country’s interests when doing so conflicts with the interests of those internationalists that finance it, and give its leader his marching orders. Sunny days, indeed. But a sunshine without much illumination of what should be seen for what it really is.

JGalt, you sense a growing pride in our country and in being Canadian? Really?

I think that you need to get out more often. Many of us, many, sense a growing shame in our country and in being Canadian, what with this narcissistic twit now at the helm!

I can just imagine the conversation over dinner tonight:

Barack: Hey Justin, I am a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where I served as president of the Harvard Law Review. I was a community organizer in Chicago before earning my law degree. I worked as a civil rights attorney and taught constitutional law at University of Chicago Law School between 1992 and 2004. I served three terms representing the 13th District in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004.

Justin: Hey Barack, I can do you one better! I was a snowboard instructor! Oh, and a bouncer at a bar! I was a part-time drama teacher! Heck, I smoke pot, even as a Member of Parliament! Oh, and my wife Sophie can sing like the angels!

Good God, let’s hope that Sophie doesn’t break out in song at tonight’s dinner!

How do you think a drama teacher will get a long with a billionaire. My guess it will cloudy ways friends cloudy ways.

Hart, quit! I’m laugh’in up a lung! Too funny, but true!

The Federal Liberals had several US Democratic campaign strategist

working for them in the last Canadian Federal election.

Did you notice how much Justin’s campaign was like Obama’s first.

The State dinner is a nice of thanking Canada ,since we paid for it.

For the first time in 40 years the USA is now exporting oil, and they

have also started exporting LNG.

Canada still is not.

Then there is the slapdown against Canada when Sad sack Kerry said the Keystone pipeline is not needed just the day before the gala.

Time for Trudeau to quit making selfies, put his big boy boots on, if they fit, and show some substance. Also the softwood agreement in play.

Hey Sea, Good luck with that.

Previous US Presidents such as Nixon, on Pierre Trudeau, and Lyndon Johnson on Mike Pearson were not quite as condescending as Obama will be to Justin.

Obama is yesterdays man, and this meeting is a whole lot of ado about nothing.

Lets see what we get out of it. Perhaps another selfie?

That Selfy came along with the price tag of that whole onteroge to travel, hotel and meals. But hey who’s counting the price tag to Canadians bottomless bank. Just another show of reckless spending.

Obama is done. The next President may not even want to know the glamour boy and his wife. If Trump wins, Trump will not likely be any good for trade in Canada. This will sink Truedeau and his budgets even further. Scary time on the horizon.
