Quesnel, B.C. – A fire caused by an explosion at West Fraser’s WestPine MDF plant in Quesnel early this evening has been put out.

Mayor Bob Simpson says crews are now just busy putting out all the hot spots.

Thankfully, he says all personnel (no word yet how many) were evacuated and are accounted for. There were no injuries.

Simpson says the explosion was ignited in the baghouse, “Which is the front end of the mill where all of the fine materials that they use to make MDF are collected and fed into the processing.”

He says it’s too early to assess the damage and doesn’t know the cause.

WorkSafe investigators have been dispatched to the scene.

I work in Quesnel and know several people that work at Westpine. Thank God everyone is accounted for. Hopefully the damage is not too extensive.

Agree, wonderful that everyone is safe.

Curious, how many people does this plant employ?

Wow sensationalism at it’s finest.

If you are not in the know bag houses catch fire quite regularly. I’ve been witness to a few myself.

This kind or reporting really does a disservice to what happened at Lakeland and Babine.

Next thing you know a slow smoldering fire underneath a chip bin (also common) will be referred to as ” Massive fire hits whatevermill”

I am impressed with your typing skills billinpg. How is it possible? No spelling errors with you head planted so deeply in your own ass?

Never seen a fire under a chip bin. Even after being under them for 5 years straight. Where are all these chip bin fires happening?

^ How did you breathe? ;)

“Wow sensationalism at it’s finest.” Maybe I’m wrong . I didn’t read anything in the article that seemed like sensationalism. The words massive, huge, gigantic, extreme and devastating weren’t used.

Good to see that there were no injuries. For info from 1980-2005 there were 119 fatalities and 718 injuries in dust explosions in the US.

The information is out there to remedy these explosions. If anyone is interested there is a good video on Youtube.com . search–combustible dust; an insidious hazard . This is from the CSB.
