Prince George, B.C. – A popular local program is back for its sixth year.

Registration has begun for the RCMP Community Policing and Victim Services units Girls’ Run for Fun program.

The free program, funded by a $3,000 grant from the City of Prince George, targets girls from the ages of 10-15 and runs April 26-June 16 at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.

During each session participants hear from speakers who will discuss issues like drug/alcohol awareness, social media safety, nutrition, self-esteem, bullying and healthy lifestyle choices.

“I think being 10-15 is pretty scary for anybody, and I think a lot of questions come up,” says Krista Levar of Victim Services. “Pretty much any girl can take the program but we do have a high-risk focus so that if there are any girls that might have financial barriers to being a part of some groups, this might be a good fit.”

She feels the program has made a difference.

“For instance we’ve had a couple of cases in Victim Services where kids have been through our program and been able to identify something that’s happened to them and come forward before anything really serious happened to them.”

Levar says the program will wrap up with a 5 km race and picnic in the park on Saturday, June 18.

Those interested are encouraged to pick up a registration package at the Community Policing office of the Prince George Detachment on Victoria Street.
