Foothills Landfill Reopens – Update

Tuesday, April 19, 2016 @ 8:22 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Foothills Landfill  in Prince George has reopened to the public.

It was temporarily closed after a fire broke out around  9 last night.  No structures or damage was reported, but heavy smoke  was carried through the area.

As a result of the fire though, there are no compost sales at the landfill and the public is asked to refrain from bringing yard and garden waste there until further notice.

Spontaneous combustion?

A very real possibility seamutt..considering how warm it has been, it could have been enough speed up the chemical reactions in the piles if they haven’t turned them. I’ve seen this happen with sawdust piles and hog fuel piles back in my sawmill days..

Gotta turn those piles if you have flammable materials close at hand.
Otherwise, it’s the heat generated by anerobic decomposition that breaks down the organic materials, but also produces methane gas.
Large scale composting operations require some continuous management, for certain.
metalman.

Back in my younger days when working at PG pulp and it was forty below outside I would go down the conveyor tunnel under the chip pile were it was always toasty warm from those chemical reactions and weight of the chips.
