Prince George, B.C. – The Walmart parking lot is the place to be today if you’d like to shred some personal or important documents.

Hosted by the Prince George Crime Stoppers Society in partnership with Shred-it Mobile Shredding Services and Walmart, the service is provided for the cost of a donation.

The goal of today’s event is to help prevent identity theft, a growing concern according to the RCMP.

“We’ve probably all, or probably will all in our lifetime experience some sort of identity theft,” says Corporal Craig Douglass.

“If you throw these important documents in the garbage there are people out there waiting to get your name, address, social insurance number and the next thing you know somebody will apply for credits cards in your name. You could end up being on the hook for thousands and thousands of dollars worth of goods.”

Proceeds from today’s event will go back to Crime Stoppers to help run the program.

It runs until 2:00 p.m. this afternoon.
