April Smashes Old Record for Warmth
Prince George, B.C.- Last month was the warmest April in Prince George since 1912 when weather information started being recorded for P.G..
Environment Canada Meteorologist Lisa Coldwells says the average temperature for last month was 8.6 degrees. ” It was a warm month, that’s for sure. We had two daily ( temperature) records on the first and the 18th, but overall the entire month continued to be warm. So we had a record breaking warm month of April, the warmest April we have on record for Prince George”.
She says normally, the average temperature for April in Prince George is around 5 degrees “The April average temperature came out to be 8.6 degrees, and the old record was in 1980 and that was 7 so significantly warmer when you break a monthly record by 1.6 degrees.”
Coldwells says the warmth is all due to El Nino, “We are still in an El Nino spring, but El Nino is now showing signs of decreasing and decaying. So I think what we’ll see is the beginning part of May still starts off pretty warm, and it looks like it will be warm next weekend as well after a brief interlude in the middle of the week with maybe a sprinkle or two. As the spring continues on and we get into early summer, the effects of el Nino are not going to be anymore a part of our weather picture because El Nino’s gone. So I think that we’re going to return to a more normal summer pattern with normal temeperatures and normal precipitation patterns for the summer months.
She says that precipitation should help recover from the extremely dry summer of 2015.
