Around 100 students from four elementary schools (Edgewood, Blackburn, Spruceland and Southridge) gathered there for the first annual SD#57 Mini Maker Faire.

Students tried their hand at a variety of tasks including sewing, knitting, coding and robotics.

“We’ve come together so that they can show off what they’ve been doing in maker faire clubs all year,” said library learning commons teacher Beth Wilcox of Southridge Elementary. “The goal is for them to explore and try new things. To just go out of their comfort zones and to see themselves as learners beyond the classroom.”

She says it’s the first time the district has held the event though she’d love to see it grow.

“This was funded through the Learning Innovations Department with School District 57. We’re hoping to grow and invite new schools next year as well.”

The event was also supported by Kaitlyn Vecchio and the Prince George Public Library, Books and Company and the MakerLab at Two Rivers Gallery.
