Severe Thunderstorm Watch in Effect for Prince George

Tuesday, July 19, 2016 @ 12:03 PM

Prince George, B.C. – It looks like the weather is about to take a turn for the worse in Prince George.

“Today conditions once again are ripe for the development of thunderstorms – not only regular thunderstorms but severe thunderstorms,” says Matt MacDonald, meteorologist with Environment Canada.

“We’ve got the warmth – we’re sitting at 21 degrees and we’ve got lots of humidity and as we head into the afternoon and that sun continues to heat the atmosphere I’d definitely keep an eye out on the horizon for deep, dark, thunderous clouds.”

He says to be wary of possible thunderstorms 2 p.m. and onwards and asks people to take note.

“Lighting is the leading cause of death from weather in Canada so don’t take it lightly. We like to say when thunder roars, go indoors.”

Looking ahead he expects this watch to last into this evening with a repeat of the same weather pattern tomorrow afternoon.

But he says the forecast isn’t all bad news.

“From Sunday onward it looks like we’re finally going to into that ridge of high pressure type scenario and so there is some good weather to finish off the month of July.”
