Prince George, B.C. – Locals have been invited to help celebrate an iconic Canadian band this weekend.

The City of Prince George has proclaimed Saturday ‘The Tragically Hip Day’ and a party featuring their music will take place at Canada Games Plaza.

In light of lead singer Gord Downie’s recent incurable cancer diagnosis, organizers also plan to raise funds for cancer research.

The event will take place in advance of the Hip’s final concert in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario Saturday night.

The day event will run from 11 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and will include music, a barbecue, a photo booth and a raffle for a Hip prize pack.

Those wanting to watch the live broadcast of the Hip’s concert Saturday night at the Ramada must obtain a free ticket which are attainable by clicking here.

Matt Hutcheon is one of the organizers of the event and until moving to Prince George a couple of years ago lived in Kingston.

So what inspired him to help organize this weekend’s party?

“For me, like for a lot of Canadians, the Hip are kind of the band that we grew up with and provided the soundtrack to our adult lives and I’m a Kingston native so I have that connection too.”
