Tuesday, August 23, 2016 @ 4:29 PM

Prince George, BC – Two people have been located and are safe following a report of an overturned canoe on the Nechako River.

RCMP  were advised around 2 this afternoon that  there was an overturned canoe at the Cottonwood Island Park boat launch.

A witness reported the canoe had capsized and the two people in it were floating down the Nechako River.

The Prince George RCMP and other emergency services attended the area.  The Prince George Search & Rescue Society, a helicopter, and a boat were requested to assist.

About 20 minutes later, police made contact with both canoe occupants who had found their way out of the Nechako River before getting to the Fraser River. Both canoers were wearing lifejackets and seemed to be uninjured.

Thank god they were wearing life jackets and that they’re OK.
Those life jackets may very well have saved their lives!
Happy ending.

Yes for lifejackets, second rule is stay with your boat if it is going to continue to float.

Most canoes float. Stay with the canoe and swim it to sore to upright it. Not sure why they abandoned it, the nechako isn’t that fast

Actually trying to deal with a water filled canoe in a current is very difficult. Seeing the water is cold I think they made the right decision not trying to fight the canoe and got out of the river.

As for not much of a current go the boat launch and have look, good current.
