Prince George, B.C. – Crime Stoppers in Prince George is offering residents a couple of opportunities each year to safely get rid of their important documents.

Local Crime Stoppers Society President Ron Polillo says “what we want to do is get people used to knowing that it’s going to be there and a service they can count on and we want to do it once in the spring, probably late April and once in the fall as is the case here, in late September.”

The society had a Shred-it Mobile Shredding Service unit on hand at the Walmart parking lot on Saturday, allowing people to drop off their papers to be shredded for a minimum $5 donation.

Polillo says “I think the benefit for the average citizen is a safe, secure way to get rid of some sensitive documents because we all know identity theft is a real issue and this is an easy way to prevent that.  At the same time, you’re making a donation to Prince George Crime Stoppers.”

It’s one of a number of fundraisers carried out each year by the society.  “We try to do two shredding events,” he says “we’re going to also try to do a pub night as a fundraiser and in the past we’ve also done a golf tournament.  So between those fundraisers and hopefully some bingo money that’s the program that we need to run the program.”

The shredding events are for the public only.
