Prince George, B.C. – The provincial government has announced $179,000 in gaming grant funds for five Prince George organizations.
They are:
- Prince George Crime Stoppers Association – $8,000
- Prince George Amateur Radio Club – $15,000
- Prince George Regional Highway Rescue Society – $60,000
- Prince George Search and Rescue Society – $70,000
- Prince George Recycling & Environmental Action & Planning Society – $26,000
“We have countless dedicated volunteers and organizations that work to provide important services and programs in our community,” says Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond. “Whether they work to protect us or the environment we know that gaming grants allow them to continue their efforts.”
Each year, Victoria approves about $135 million in community gaming grants for non-profit organizations in six sectors: arts and culture; sport; human and social services; public safety; environment; parent and district parent advisory councils.

“We have countless dedicated volunteers and organizations that work to provide important services and programs in our community,” says Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond. “Whether they work to protect us or the environment we know that gaming grants allow them to continue their efforts.”
If that is indeed the case, perhaps the BC Liberal Government can restore funding to the original 33% of gaming revenue that was originally distributed to non-profit community organizations in BC. Under the BC Liberal government, the community’s share has now been reduced to just 10% of gaming revenues. Come on BC Libs, after all, they provide “important services and programs in our communities.” Guess we will just have to wait for Christy Clark and company to get right on this…

I’m wondering why Amateur Radio gets $15,000 and only $8,000 to Crimestoppers? I would have thought it would be the other way around, but what do I know?
Just guessing, but it could be that: (a) Crimestoppers has a greater ability to obtain funding from other sources than Amateur Radio; (b) Amateur Radio may have a special need right now, e.g. buying a bunch of new equipment. (In case you don’t know, Amateur Radio does a lot of public service work in the form of providing emergency communications and so forth. It isn’t just a hobby club.)
So they gov made about 50 million of our casino and we get $180,000… how generous
The $180,000 is for those 6 groups,. There are many other groups that get funding. The City itself gets some $1.5 Million annually.
Minor hockey raked in $100,000 in gaming grant money last season. Most sports groups in town apply for and receive funding as do most -if not all- PACs at the local schools.
As someone who is familiar with the radio club, we completed the required forms and actually submitted a request for close to $20,000. Only approved for $15,000 as the government rates everyone’s application for how complete and following a variety of rules, etc.
The majority of the funds requested this year will be going towards back-up / emergency power / solar at several of radio sites around PG.
The main role of the club is to provide public service and that is mainly providing radio coverage for the PG Search and Rescue society when they go on searches. We don’t go on all searches but did three in the past month.
Our club provides the largest radio coverage network , of all the ones in BC, in many remote and non-cell coverage areas.
