UNBC-TRU Basketball Rivalries Resume

Prince George, B.C. –  The UNBC Timberwolves rebounded from a slow start in the first quarter and went on to defeat the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 89-82 Friday night at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre.

UNBC’s victory stopped a brief two-game losing streak, improving their record to 2-7 in CIS Canada West. The WolfPack fall to 3-7.  Second-year forward Maria Mongomo sparked UNBC’s offence with a game-high 26 points.

The women’s squads clash again this afternoon at 5 p.m. in the annual Shoot for the Cure game in support of raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research.

 

In the men’s encounter Friday night, TRU extended their winning streak to three while ending UNBC’s unbeaten run at four games with an 87-81 victory.  Both teams now sport identical 4-5 records.

TRU ran out to a fast start with a 22-15 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 50-26 after 20 minutes.  Second-year forward Austin Chandler led UNBC with 22 points and eight rebounds. Second-year shooting guard Saje Gosal was next with 17 points, all of which he netted in the fourth quarter when UNBC outscored the WolfPack 39-18 to make it a close game.

The clubs battle again at 7 tonight to see which side can improve their record to .500 for the season.
