Prince George, B.C. – Spring officially arrived at 3:29 this morning and it looks like a cooler than normal winter is about to make way for an average spring.

That according to Doug Lundquist, meteorologist with Environment Canada.

“What I think we’re going to see is a fight between Arctic air and the warmer air – going more the way of the warmer air for spring. But because it has been so cold we kind of have to catch up a bit,” he says.

“So, what I’m thinking is we’ll be closer to average for temperatures, but plus or minus. Kind of flirting up and down what is about average.”

He says he’s a lot more confident predicting what the weather will be like next winter than this spring and summer.

“It looks like we’re going to go into an El Nino situation. So, it looks like next winter will probably be above average for temperatures,” says Lundquist. “I’m way more confident about saying that than I am about spring or summer.”

In the short term, he says temperatures should reach double digits (10) by Wednesday and again on Friday.

Lundquist says it’s safe to say winter like conditions won’t be making a return to this region.

“My definition (for the end of winter) is the temperature has to stay above zero for a decent amount of time. More above zero than below zero. I don’t think we’re going to hit a pattern where we’re going to stay below zero for day and night for any length of time,” he says.“We’ll have frostiness but in general the days are going to be mild and warm. I think (winter) is over.”
