Cougars vs. Winterhawks in Round One

Monday, March 20, 2017 @ 8:00 AM

Prince George, B.C.- The  Prince George Cougars will face the Portland Winterhawks in the first round of the  WHL  Playoffs. The Winterhawks entered the final day of the WHL regular season in third place in the U.S. Division, staring down a first-round head-to-head with the Seattle Thunderbirds. But a 7-2 loss to the Spokane Chiefs combined with a dramatic overtime win by the Tri-City Americans dropped Portland from third in the U.S. and into the first wild card seed in the conference. As a result, rather than keep things close to home in the Pacific Northwest, the Winterhawks will now embark on a northern road trip to Prince George for the first round of the 2017 WHL Playoffs.

The Cougars wrapped up the B.C. Division title Saturday night earning a single point against the Kamloops Blazers to wrap up their most successful regular season in their 23 year history.

Games 1 and 2 are set for March 24 and 25, respectively, at the CN Centre in Prince George. From there, the two clubs will meet at Portland’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum for Games 3 and 4 on March 28 and 29, respectively. Games 5, 6 and 7 are still to be determined.

Doesn’t look like Portland wanted to play Seattle!

Wow, Portland team has a lot of tenacity, hope we get by them.

Portland has a good PP, so we just have to stay out of the box and play smart.

GO COUGARS GO

Why was my comment about this article being the same as the one from whl.ca deleted? I was not vulgar, rude, or fictional.

Congrats to the cougars for their season results , but don’t think they really gain any advantage in the play-offs getting Portland in the first round . I think they are better off to let them have game 5 at home if needed than the extra travel that would result with it the other way and the series going 6 or 7 games . Getting the first two this weekend will be huge for them .

Here’s hoping that our boys dispatch Portland quickly so that they can rest up a bit for the next series! I also hope that Kamloops and Kelowna beat each other up really really bad and go the full 7 games, haha!
