Prince George, B.C. – A sell-out crowd of 5,822 fans at CN Centre saw the Portland Winterhawks beat the Prince George Cougars 5-3 to take a 3-2 lead in their first round series tonight.
The Cougars scored early – just 1:09 into the first – on Jared Bethune’s second of the playoffs.
But Winterhawk goalie Cole Kehler stole the show from there stopping 48 of 51 shots the rest of the way.
Ryan Hughes scored the winner at 14:22 into the third to secure the victory.
Final shots were 51-28 for Prince George with Ty Edmonds taking the loss. Game 6 goes Monday in Portland.
We’ll have a full recap tomorrow morning.

What a fun game to watch, and a great comeback by the Cougars in the third before a couple bad bounces turned the game to Portland for good. Definitely the loudest it’s been in there for a long time after O’Brien and McAuley scored in the third period. Hopefully they can bring it home for game 7 on Wednesday. GO CATS GO!!!!!
History repeating itself the wrong way this time! 20 years ago the Cougs eliminated a highly favoured Portland team to start a Cinderella run. Hope the boys can bring this one back and finish it to advance!
I said the same thing after game 4! Geez, I sure hope not . . .
The roughing penalty was the beginning of the end and led the score to be 2-1 at the end of the first. The perfect hit that led to a charging call because his helmet fell off was precious. Was a great game all the way to the end, somebody in PG won last night with a check for 40,000.00 – wow
