Springwood Re-Opening Meeting Tonight
Prince George, B.C. – The community information meeting to discuss the re-opening of Springwood Elementary is set for this evening.
Trustees from School District 57 along with SD57 staff will be on hand to not only answer questions, but to gather information parents and area residents feel should be shared.
The meeting is set to start at 7 tonight in the Multi-purpose Room at Kelly Road Secondary School.
While students in the K-Grade 6 regular program who live in the new catchment area for Springwood will automatically be registered in Springwood Elementary for the 2017-18 school year, students wishing to stay at their current school must apply for transfer. Student transfer applications are available now by clicking here
Students in the Grade 7 regular programming and living within the Springwood catchment area have a choice. They can either choose to stay at their current school or make the move to Springwood. These students are not required to fill out a Springwood Elementary Student Transfer application.
The Student Transfer application process is open until 3 p.m. on Friday April 21st.
School board chair Tim Bennett says reaction from parents has been mixed since the school’s reopening was announced.
“We’ve heard from parents who are just really excited for their kids to be attending a reopened school – especially those who are in the neighbourhood who can now walk to school,” he says. “We’ve also heard a lot of questions, concerns, some anxiety regarding what does this mean for our students? There’s still a lot of questions that parents have about how this is going to work.”
But he adds he’s pleased the school district’s communications strategy seems to be working so far.
“Letters have gone home to every child who’s affected. A follow-up phone call to each household has also been made. So, this allows parents the opportunity to talk to somebody personally – to get their questions asked. I’m really looking forward to the meeting this evening.”
