Prince George, B.C. – Eight days into the provincial election campaign and none of the party leaders have made an appearance in Prince George yet.

In light of their absence, 250News asked UNBC Political Science lecturer Jason Morris if locals should feel slighted.

“The party leaders run a provincial campaign and they also have to be mindful of winning their own seat in the district that they’re contesting,” he says.

“That being said, in spite it still being early in the campaign Prince George residents should expect the party leaders to come through this neck of the woods. Not just because it’s a thoroughfare to other parts of the province but because it’s a region of the province that matters economically, politically, socially too.”

Does Morris think it matters to voters?

“One of the roles of the party leader is to represent the base of the province, especially if that person is or becomes the premier. It should matter of course for a party leader to visit as many places of the province as time can possibly allow to show that all parts of the province are important.”

He adds we should all consider however that running a short, 28-day campaign is a “very complicated endeavour.”

“And it’s not going to be possible for all voters in all places to have that same access to all the leaders as much as they’d like. Fortunately, you can also today look to other venues such as social media and traditional media to get your leader fix.”

General Voting Day is set for May 9.
