Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George plans to replace 25 of Prince George’s 66 playgrounds to get them up to the standards set out by the Canadian Standards Association.

The City’s five-year Playground Plan outlines the schedule for the replacement of those parks which also involves the removal of 20 playgrounds which will remain as parkland or open green spaces.

The City is working on a request for proposal for the supply and installation of new play equipment at four existing playgrounds this summer: Byng Park, St. Mary’s Park, North College Park, and Eaglenest Park (the City won’t know the full cost until contracts have been awarded).

Construction of the new equipment is set to start in August and be complete in September.

Parks staff will begin removing non-CSA compliant playground equipment next month. Those parks were chosen as the lowest priority for reinvestment through the City’s Park Strategy approved by City Council in January.

The parks were chosen based on condition, public consultation, and distribution of parks city-wide and does not include school playgrounds.

The City will notify residents in affected neighbourhoods prior to the removal of any equipment.
