The park is more and more getting used as a hang out for drunks and druggies. Twice last week they had a big police, fire, and ambulance response for what looked like drug overdose response. I counted over a dozen first responders, and remember thinking through the calculations of how much that costs taxpayers on a regular basis. They tend to hang out by the bushed area near the playground. One guy I think even lives there. It used to be they all hanged out behind Rainbow Lodge and Harry Loader Park, but I have seen more and more they are in Rainbow now as well.

Not sure if they got the run put on them from the other park, if Rainbow is now an overflow, or if they just like that park because it’s well lit with some treed areas they can hide in, or if it’s just somewhat safer with the higher traffic volume?

If Rainbow park is being used more and more by druggies, this is a major cause for concern for families and children that frequent the park! Will people need to start doing a thorough scan of the areas that their children use, in order to pick up needles before their children are allowed to play? How sad is that!

Exactly. As far as I am concerned the playground is obsolete and should be removed anyways. The marry-go-round is a leg breaker just waiting, the druggies in the bush, just not a safe place for kids alone. When I take my kids for walks or rides through that park we just move along and never stop at the playground ever. They don’t even question it anymore, and just know it’s off limits.

Spruceland and Lakewood both have excellent and clean safe playgrounds nearby, so no need to use the Rainbow Park playground.

I think Harry Loader and Rainbow Park would be some of the most dangerous parks in the city for used needle risk. Any park in a low visibility treed area near the ‘low income’ areas would likely be no different. Rainbow and Harry Loader especially because of proximity to liquor stores and the like.

Sounds like they were chased by Run DMC?

Maybe he was just walking the same direction and when they started running he thought there was something behind all of them that was dangerous and so started to run just in case he was in danger too. (There was a cartoon I vaguely remember from the past that used this concept with 2 men going through the “hood” in the same direction.)

In the past 15 years I have yet to meet a bylaw enforcement type in our city parks. Wonder why.

They are holed up in Timmie’s at Lakewood! Don’t believe me? Check it out in the afternoon, they’re often there when I arrive for coffee with friends, and they’re usually still there when we leave! Their contract obviously doesn’t call for just a brief 15 minute break!
