Prince George,  B.C. –  Prince George Cougars General Manager Todd Harkins announced today that the Cougars have inked forward Tyson Phare (Maple Ridge, B.C.) to a Standard WHL Player Agreement.

Earlier this month the Cougars selected Phare with their first round pick (18th Overall) in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft in Calgary. He checks in at 6’0”, 180 pounds and is a right-handed shot. In 28 games with the Yale Hockey Academy Lions, Phare scored 18 goals along with 22 assists for 40 points while adding 56 penalty minutes. In six games at the John Reid Memorial Bantam Tournament (held in St. Albert, AB in January) he scored six goals while adding seven assists for 13 points. Last week he was one of four 2017 Cougar draft picks to receive an invite to Team BC’s U-16 Provincial Summer Camp taking place July 11-15 in Shawnigan Lake.

“Heading into the 2017 draft we identified Tyson Phare as the type of player who could be a cornerstone of our franchise for many years to come.  When he was still available for us to draft with the 18th pick, it was a no-brainer for us,” said Cougars General Manager, Todd Harkins. “He’s an exceptionally well-rounded player who skates well, competes hard in all areas of the ice and has great finish around the net. He doesn’t back down. He gives his best every single time he takes the ice.”

Harkins adds, “Our entire organization is excited about the future and all that lies ahead and having Tyson and his family committed to the Cougars marks another significant moment for our franchise.”

Phare will attend his first Training Camp with the Cougars in late August. As a 2002-born player he won’t be eligible to join the Cougars full-time until the 2018-19 season, but he can dress in a maximum of five regular season games as an under-ager in 2017-18.
