“Substantial Increase” Expected in Cariboo Fires

Sunday, July 16, 2017 @ 4:24 PM

Prince George, B.C. – The B.C. Wildfire Service has issued a bulletin stating that a major wind event forecast for the Cariboo and southern BC today is expected to bring gusts up to 70 km/h for some areas.

Given the current wildfire situation the Service expects the weather system will lead to a substantial increase in fire activity throughout the Cariboo region.  The bulletin says current fire could grow significantly and new fires may burn and spread aggressively.  Despite the efforts of ground crews to prepare for this event over the past few days containment is expected to be made difficult by hot and dry conditions and gusting winds.

Due to the fact existing fires are close to communities, infrastructure and transportation routes, people throughout the Cariboo region and the south interior should prepare for potential evacuations.

The BC Wildfire Service is urging everyone to stay out of the backcountry in the affected areas.  Provincial parks and recreation sites in the Cariboo were previously closed to the public.

Up-to-date information on current evacuation alerts and orders are available on the Emergency Management BC website at www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca and on local government websites.

Maybe stop throwing the fear of god and panic into people, every 2 hours? Enjoying the pageviews from these fear articles? Nothing we can do about the wind, nothing we can do about the weather.. so stop trying to throw panic out there about ‘what may happen’. Gets old fast.

    really?

Maybe it’s better for people to be prepared and forewarned.

I greatly appreciate all the rapid updates 250 News has been posting. Sometimes I can’t even find the updates on the various regional districts’ sites or Twitter feeds, yet it’s already posted here.

For those of us with friends and family in the danger zones, 250 News is providing vital information as it happens and many are very, very grateful for this service. No other news source (CBC, Global, the PG Citizen, etc.) is coming even close to posting as much solid information so rapidly, even on Twitter.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: Thank you for all your hard work on this situation, 250 News!

I wonder if you have ever been in an evacuation situation I have and you know what we appreciated all the information we could get you call panic I call it information

Until you been there yourself you will never know so you might want to learn before you speak

In a situation like this there is no such thing as to much info..anything that helps the people prepare or know what expect is a good thing…comments like yours are just useless, are you trying to minimize the devastation?

Nice to get some news about the fire and evacuees. I know Trudeau does not want to hear about it.

Oh you do do you.. you in contact with our PM are you? Or are you just using this horrific event just to toss a dig at him.. showing no class at all…

It would be a different situation if were Ontario or Quebec!

No, tree and forests burn the same there as here..

Trust a Con to politicize something as non-partisan as a natural disaster.

So here is a trick to see if your home is still safe providing you still have power to your house. If you have a answer machine phone your house if it picks up its still there, but if it does not , don’t panic the power could be down. Its not full prof but it will help you know if the the answer machine comes on.

who has answering machines these days?

      Radio Shack

Good point about answering machines..those are antiques now :).

To see if you loose power while away you put a cup of water in your freezer and once it’s frozen put a coin on top of the ice..

On your return if the coin is still on top of the ice you never lost power..
