Wildfires Close Highway 20 West of Williams Lake
Prince George, B.C. – The BC Wildfire Service says fire activity in the Bald Mountain area has increased to the point it is recommending the immediate closure of Highway 20, in both directions, from the Fraser River to the Alex Graham 600 Road until further notice. The Farwell Canyon Road is closed as well.
The 180,000 hectare Hanceville fire is being fanned by strong winds and is exhibiting aggressive Rank 5 and Rank 6 fire behaviour. Closing the highway will allow firefighters and equipment to move through the area more easily as well as protect the public.
As of Saturday there are 338 firefighters, an Incident Management Team, 13 aircraft and 86 pieces of heavy equipment battling the Hanceville wildfire.
The BC Wildfire Service stresses that travellers are urged to avoid that area as fire behaviour and weather can change quickly. And again as noted the Highway 20 closure will remain in effect until the public is notified otherwise.
