Wildfires Top Million Hectares Mark
Prince George, B.C.-The wildfires in B.C. have consumed more than a million hectares of land since April 1st.
The latest estimate from the B.C. Wildfire Service is that 1,021,674 hectares have been burned. That surpasses the previous mark of 855 thousand hectares which was set in 1958.
The Plateau fire, is now the single largest fire in the province as 19 fires have merged in the area north of Highway 24. At 467,461 hectares, it is believed to be the largest single fire ever recorded in B.C.
There is another wind event expected before the week is through, as a cold front is expected Wednesday and Thursday. what is not know, is if there will be any rain associated with the cold front.
Since April 1st, the BC Wildfire Service has responded to 1,064 fires in B.C. Today there are 135 fires, including 7 new fires reported yesterday.
