Badminton BC and the North Central Badminton Academy announced this morning at UNBC’s Northern Sport Centre the City will host the 2020 Canadian Masters National Badminton Championship from April 26 to May 2, 2020.
Tourism Prince George helped put the finishing touches on the bid and will be involved in planning activities for the athletes once they arrive.
“We want to make sure the athletes, friends and families get to experience all the best things to do in the area and ensure they leave with memorable experiences that bring people to Prince George for years to come,” said CEO Erica Hummel.
She added the event will provide a nice economic boost for the City.
“Yeah, absolutely. So, just with the 200 athletes we’re looking at just under half a million dollars. It’s a significant event. The age category with all adults over 30 is great too. They usually travel with other people and do things in the evenings. Dining and experiencing all the attractions.”
Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall said he was “really excited” about the announcement.
“As you know, I’ve been talking about major sporting events for a very long time. So, this is excellent,” he said. “It’s an offshoot of what we did with the 2015 Canada Winter Games. That really set the stage for us to go after major events.”
Earlier this spring it was announced Prince George will host the 2022 BC Summer Games.

Leave it for the masters debaters to discuss this one, but I will say that in 2020 I would not want to be a little birdie in that room with all those geriatric arms swing wildly….
Dumb comment from me. Sorry about that… Sometimes what seems witty at the time is just not so after hitting the post button in a rush to post….
