Job Fair To Assist Forest Workers

A job fair is being held at CNC today. The program is part of Community Development trust a joint venture of the federal and provincial government. British Columbia is putting $129 million into the fund which is to be used for assistance for forest workers.

The program focuses on three areas, tuition assistance, transitional assistance for older workers, and job opportunities. The program will run for a three year period.

Included in the program is $5,000 dollars in tuition assistance for forest workers who have been laid off for a period of four months or longer.

Another program will target senior forest workers who have been laid to move to retirement. Under that program available to workers 55 and older, the incentive to withdraw from the labor force ranges up to $60,000 dollars, depending on age and seniority. That program is available from June 16th to August 15th.

A further program offers support short term employment opportunities in the forest sector.
