Prince George, B.C.- Construction is expected to start within two months on the construction of a women’s unit of the Prince George Regional Corrections Centre.
Initially announced last January, the project is still in the design and planning stage, but is expected to go out to tender soon.
The project has a price tag of $11.3 million dollars and will create a unit at the Prince George Corrections Centre which has more space for women’s programs.
B.C. Corrections spokesperson, Bruce Bannerman says women are currently held in an 18 cell unit that was converted from the men’s section “Once the new space is complete the existing women’s unit will revert back to house males”. That means 18 cells single cells will be available for male inmates.
The women’s unit will have 20 cells with a capacity to hold 24 inmates. It will also provide more space to offer programs for the women.
There are 250 women in custody across the province of B.C. . In Prince George, there are usually about 20 women in custody.
