Prince George, B.C. – The design phase of the new Prince George RCMP building has completed the programming for the facility space and the next step will see the City issue a Request for Proposals for a contractor to join the design and administration team. The contractor will be asked to look at the design and help put the final dollar figures to the construction of the building. That contractor will provide advice on the most cost effective ways to proceed with the building.
The City’s Manager of Leisure Services, Tom Madden, says the project is a little off schedule as the design of the building was expected to be complete a couple of months ago “We are behind a little bit in that, but we’re still in line with moving forward to bring something out. We are still sorting some things out with the RCMP and we are hopeful we will see some action on the site in the fall.”
The project is expected to cost between $25 and $30 million dollars and will take 18 months to build. It is hoped the RCMP could occupy the new facility by the middle of 2010.
The new facility will be built to LEED gold standards. “We are going to try and recover some of the materials that were used in the existing building at that site (the old liquor store/bingo hall) so we’re looking at that as well, so that is one of the reasons why it is taking a little bit longer.” Madden says they want to be in the market place for trades people at the right times, “Right now, the Duchess Park School construction project is out there, we know there will be some construction at the PG Regional Correction Centre, and so, what other projects are there going to be that will take up the trades.” Madden says the good news is the Olympic construction will be winding down soon and that should free up a good number of people.
Madden says projects like the Downtown Traffic Study also have an impact on the building’s final design “Some of the decisions being made on the streets around the facility, lights, traffic, all those kinds of things are areas we need to know and understand before we can move forward”.

Will it also be possible to add additionl floors to the building as the size of our police force increases? As you know with the increase in our social problems we will certainly need more officers to enforce our laws.
And I almost forgot this structure will also need native representation in its design. We must continue to show that they are special to us as we continue to ignore their real needs for a place in our society and self government. Politics are alive and well.
