Skakun Also To Re-Ask Debt Questions

By Ben Meisner

The debt report is out but it doesn't  really spell it out.

Councilor Brian Skakun says he has a call in to the Finance Department of the City  to get some "Hard numbers that clearly spell out the debt and credit limits".
Skakun says the Finance Department has to put this sort of thing into layman's terms so all taxpayers  have a clear picture of  what the City owes, and  how much is left in the bank.

Skakun posed the question  when Council was giving third reading to three borrowing bylaws which cleared the way for the city to borrow more than $27 million dollars.  At the time, the City's Finance Department said it didn't know how much the City owed, but that it would report back to Council.

The report delivered today talks  a great deal about  the City's ability to borrow being based on it's ability to pay, but doesn't spell out just how much money the City  "owes".

Well done Brian Skakun! It's obvious that he takes his position of representing the community...to heart!!! Politicians speaking in layman's terms??? What a concept!!!!!!!!!!!!
Accounting is fairly complicated all right. It does take a little bit of time and effort to understand what the figuires mean. I just hope the Finance Department can make it simple eough for Councillor Skakun.
I hope the finance department can make it simple enough for everyone!! After all, it is EVERYONE who stands to lose/gain from the debt of our city. I believe it is commendable that Skakun has EVERYONE's interests at heart.

Oh I don't know about that. Councillor Skaken simply craves the lime light, so I doubt the request for more info is anything but more of the same. Worse yet Skaken is a union pawn and gets used as such, so working for EVERYONE is certainly a ridiculous claim.
I can see a bit of election politicing here, so I wull add that I have not seen any flash of brilliance from Councillor Skaken during the past term on council, quite the contrary IMO. I'm not recommending anyone yet, but Councillor Skaken absolutely does not have my vote. We need more from a councillor that just "Hey, look at me!"
