Prince George, B.C.- Canfor has decided the North Central Plywood plant will  NOT  be rebuilt.
Canfor’s Vice President of Manufacturing, Mark Feldinger delivered the news moments ago to workers through a conference call.
The decision impacts more than 200 unionized employees who were put on the unemployment line May 27th the day after the plant in the Prince George B.C.R. site, burned to the ground.
In the call, Feldinger told the workers, “This has been a difficult decision that was not lightly reached”
Feldinger said this is not a reflection on the performance of the workers of NCP rather that is was  based on fibre supply  and markets.
A letter is being couriered to all workers. Severance will be paid under the “permanent plant closure” provisions under the collective agreement.
Further information will be posted at the Union Hall.
The conference all lasted only a couple of minutes, with no questions being taken from those who listened. Feldinger wrapped up the call saying “In closing I would like to thank you all for your hard work and dedication and pride in the site, it is well deserved.”

I figured that's what would happen but it still hurts.
Of course not. They knew that the day it burned. The time delay was for appearances and getting ducks in a row, not for making a go/no go decision.
That doesnt mean that Canfor wont build a new plywood plant. It might mean that they will wait 2 years to rebuild so they can open a non-union shop. Jimmy P. takes his union busting very seriously.

I hope PG is able to weather this storm. Maybe a new mayor and council will be able to come up with something. Maybe a large ski resort in the area? Seriously, the snow has come back to the area and there are less days that are colder than -20c.

PG is a resourceful community and far more diverse than Mackenzie or the other small towns in the area. I choose to be optimistic.
OH WOW big shock there we all knew it the day it went up in flames.
Way to go Opinion 250!
As a news junkie I see you beat everyone to the Plywood story. But I do see that Arthur Williams says he got his story up at 2:00, that was before the conference call even took place. He must have read it in his tea leaves! LOL
