Prince George, B.C. – Time is winding down to have your say on the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George’s Draft Regional Solid Waste Management Plan is just a few days away.
Since the draft plan to handle the garbage in the region was unveiled July 18th, there have been public meetings, presentations to local councils, and the on line survey continues to gather input.
“Our hope is that as many people as possible have a chance to give us their feedback on the draft plan,” says Petra Wildauer, General Manager of Environmental Services with the Regional District. “In order for the plan to be successful, we need the public’s support and buy-in, so it’s critical that the plan is a reflection of how people want garbage handled in our area.”
Highlights of the draft plan include:
- curbside collection of recyclables for households in Prince George receiving curbside garbage collection ( adding $30 -$40 dollars a year to garbage collection costs)
- seasonal curbside collection of yard waste offered twice in the spring and twice in the fall for residents in the District of Mackenzie
- a reduction in the number of transfer stations but the remaining ones will become staffed, full-service waste management facilities offering a range of garbage disposal, recycling and composting opportunities
- one regional landfill (Foothills Landfill) that will be a modern, sanitary landfill servicing the disposal needs of the whole Regional District (all other landfills receiving municipal solid waste/garbage have been closed or will be closed in the near future)
- tipping fees for all who use the Foothills Landfill
- Mackenzie Landfill will continue to be used for the composting of yard waste and, along with Legrand Select Waste landfill, will be used for the disposal of construction waste (wood, concrete, soil, etc.)
The Regional District has posted the draft plan and a short on line survey on its website at www.rdffg.bc.ca.
So far, more than 500 surveys have been received, but the Regional District is hoping that increases by the survey deadline on Sunday, August 3.
“More than 700 people responded to our initial survey, so we’re hoping now that we have something tangible to present, more people will get involved and give us their thoughts,” says Wildauer. “It’s important to reduce the amount of garbage going to our landfills, and we know people in the region share that goal with us. We hope we’ve developed a plan that gives us the roadmap to achieve that.”
