Prince George, B.C.- The 14th edition of the Communities in Bloom competition comes to Prince George today with the arrival of the Judges.

This year, Prince George is competing in the International class, along with Toronto and Brampton Ontario, The County of Strathcona Alberta, Aberdeen Scotland, and Stockton-on-Tees England.

Qualified Communities in Bloom judges will evaluate the communities on their overall performance in the following areas: tidiness, environmental awareness, community involvement, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscaped areas, floral displays, and turf & groundcovers.

The evaluation is based on the local conditions and achievements of citizens, businesses, organizations, institutions and the municipal government working together. The detailed evaluation reports identify each community's strengths and provide suggestions for improvement.

Anne Martin, with Communities in Bloom Prince George, says they have developed a tour to outline what they believe to be highlights of the community, “We are taking the judges on a helicopter tour, a buggy ride through Fort George Park, a canoe ride from Wilson Park to Exploration Place and have arranged tours to places such as the Library, UNBC and Milburn Community Gardens. We also asked the judges to come during the PGX so they could see the people out and about and get a feel for the types of activities we enjoy.”

The results, including annual bloom ratings, criteria award recognitions and winners, will be announced at the National Awards Ceremonies, hosted this year by the City of Lethbridge, Alberta on September 19 & 20, 2008.
The judges are to be here till the 9th.

Don't tell me let me guess.
Taxpayers are paying for this?
someone has to pay
It appears they are not going to take a tour of the 3rd and George area, the Hood area and some other areas of Prince George. I wonder why??????
Milburn Community Gardens are IN the hood. And well done, too.
The Hood is turning out to be as good (even better) then some other Prince George neighbourhoods. Good work on the homeowners who care about the neighbourhood.
Is this some kind of a joke. Because we have hung a few baskets with flowers along the Central we can enter a contest. Ft George Park is our jewel? Will they go for a drive along Opika?

Cheers
Come on people! At least someone is trying to help improve our community. Why so negative??? Every city has a hood area as you call it. Do you think Toronto and Brampton are going to tour the judges through their HOOD? We finally have some positive and you people can not see past your ignorant noses and give some support.
Lot's of people in this city take pride in their yards and I for one thank them for it! They come in all walks of life from the poor to the wealthiest. Pride has no price, everyone can afford it. :)
I hope the best for Prince George and even if we do not win the fact that we could even enter is good enough for me. Happy gardening all!!
Shell Shadow. You miss the point. Once we get into taking people along a disignated route, showing them the best looking part of the City we become a part of this town that consistantly lies about what the town is really like.

If you had your eyes open around this Burg for the last few days, you would have seen City employees all over the designated route picking up paper, cutting grass, and picking up dust. This crap has been laying around the City for months and they are only cleaning it now because of this inane contest. The parts of the City that are not included in the tour still have waist high grass, grungy sidewalks,. and garbage strewn all over.

Once the contest is over you can rest assured that the City will let the grass grow, garbage flow, and dust blow.

You have to know that when the City allows adds in Seattle papers to refer to Prince George as the **Serangeti of the North** to attract people to use the Seattle to Prince George ill fated daily flights that we have a huge credibility problem, and I might add have inadvertantly insulted the real Serangeti.
I wonder if the wonderful dandylion gardens we have all over the city was part of the blooming tour?

On average we get 200-300 dandylion plants out of our front lawn every year.
Of course it doesn't help when some neighbours let their crops go untouched year after year.
A person with some extra time could start a dandylion winery in this town.
