Straw Poll on the Downtown Heating Project

By Ben Meisner

I happened to speak to the sale of Terasen gas the other night, there were about 70 people there; certainly far more than have attended the civic political forums. So I decided the time was ripe to ask, just how many in the audience had heard about the City's  proposal to spend $9.5 million dollars to build a heating plant that would heat the downtown.

First question was, do you support the idea of having this project go ahead? 1 vote in favor, that from Rick Smith, seeking office as a Councilor,
2nd question:  Would you vote against the plan?  24 said they would vote against.

Third question:  Do you need more information on the project because you don’t know what’s going on?  The balance about 45 people raised their hands for that one.

It speaks volumes about what many of us have been saying, that City Hall hasn’t done even a basic job of informing the people on this one.

Contrary to what Councilor Bassermann and Mayor Colin Kinsley would like you to believe.

In the community there is a distinct feeling that we do not have any idea on the City's plans.  If some Councilors go down to defeat, they can look to this as one issue where they failed to inform the public.

Now did we hit an audience that was not well informed, you tell me?
Post a comment and answer this question, do you understand what the city is planning on the issue of the city borrowing $9.5 million dollars to build a heating plant for the down town?. And two, would you support the plan?
Thanks for your help.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Im at a complete loss as to why we would go back to wood burning to heat buildings, except of course because the City is now paying a fortune for Gas, and apparently we cant get decent electricity rates from Hydro, even though we own it and the lines go through our back yard. It seem to me we are going backward.
There will be competition for the wood waste for this project down the road, and you can rest assured that Canfor will be sure to get what they need for their 3 co-gen units. Has anyone looked into accessing the excess steam generated a Canfors Pr, George, and Intercon Mills to see if steam can be piped from these facilities??
All the knowledge that I have on the heating project comes from opinion 250. The City needs to involve its self in the day to day operation of our city. If this project is such a great thing perhaps our Mayor should get involved in selling it to the private sector.
Good meeting tho but like you said, to many grey heads. We need MORE hungery younger people to take an interest in the management of our energy such as gas and oil.
Guilty, don't know anything about it. Too lazy to check City site. Probably something there.
Seems to me steam heat needs lots of maintainance and never seems to run right, a very fine balancing effort to get it to work. A few schools and Baldy Hughes used to use steam. I don't know if the Baldy Hughes system is still going, but the schools didn't seem to last very long. Mines also use steam and so do the pulp mills, will it work for a city? I doubt it.
Me too - heard about it right here. Don't want to vote on support until I know much much more. Thanks Ben, for keeping us informed.
