Prince George, B.C. – Short skirts, leggings, denim, scarves, layers and ballerina shoes are just some of the trends youth will be sporting upon their return back to school in September.
Opinion 250 chatted with merchants at Pine Centre Mall to find out what is hot for this year’s back to school must buys.

Brace yourself, the 80s are back. Leg warmers, florescent colours and big sweaters are the rave this season. Cindy from Bootlegger says the trend is a bit more stylish however than some of us remember, “We are getting a lot of bright greens and hot pinks as well as clothes with graphics and peace symbols. The new hot colour for guys is purple.”
Ardene confirmed this trend with a rack of legwarmers, leggings and 80s inspired jewelry.
The trusty pair of jeans is still hot. Almost every store claimed denim as the number one seller. The reminder however is to dress to your body, not to the trend. Whether it is a skinny jean, low rise or flare, jeans are “in” as long as you are not falling out. You can also buy your jeans with the already worn look so you do not have to wear the pair of jeans you bought in the 80s to get the look.

In terms of accessories, the walls at Caps are not plain black. Hats these days are more about flash and style with various prints, colours and camouflage.

Backpacks for girls seem to be the thing of the past as purses are now large enough to carry books in.

Although shoes are not considered an accessory by most fashion gurus, there are a variety of different styles to choose from. Whether it is Crocs, short boots, Sketchers or Nike Air, shoes can be considered a main part of an outfit. This is especially because the average pair of shoes can range from $50.00 to $100.00.

Garage is carrying a look that has finally hit Prince George. The printed rubber boots have been high fashion in Vancouver for awhile. Michelle at Garage says the skinny fleece, argyle and yoga gear are the most popular sales, “On average kids will spend about $250.00 for their back to school clothes.”
Andrea from Bell says back to school is the new Christmas, “We have noticed a larger amount of teenagers coming in within the last couple of weeks. They come in and look and then bring their parents back.”
The Samsung Instinct is the phone of choice because it is all touch screen. The phone itself is $129.95, if you purchase a three year plan. Monthly packages range from $25.00 and up depending on the number of minutes and different functions. In order to purchase a plan at Bell individuals must be 19 years of age which means parents are on the hook to put the contract under their name. Andrea also says the Querty phone is popular because it has a keyboard, “With the amount of texting teens do, this is handy.”
There are 10 shopping days left until class begins!
