Prince George, BC. – The World Baseball Challenge is looking for $100 thousand dollars for the creation of temporary seating at the Citizen Field. Right now that facility has a maximum seating capacity of 250.   The extra seating would boost that to 3,000 with standing room for a further 2,000.
The event organizers are asking City Council to help cover the costs.
The World Baseball Challenge will take place in Prince  George in July of next year.  Teams confirmed so far are: the host  team, Canada, the USA, Cuba and Taiwan are all confirmed for the  event and organizers ae trying to get Japan to  take part.
Organizer Jim Swanson says landing Cuba for the tournament is akin to having the Montreal Canadiens show up for a hockey tournament.
While Council sees the value in the  tournament and is excited about the  event,  it opted to first have staff take a look at where it might find the money requested.

Why not ask for a liquoR licence while you are at it...I am sure you would get that one!
There will be a beer garden. Of that you can be sure. But it's a special event license.
$100,000 for temporary seating ! Yet when the people of Foothills school needed $40,000 for a traffic light to prevent kids from being ran down, that even the city agrees is needed, they tell them it has to wait a year or two to go through the budget process. But we can come up with $100,000 for temporary seating or even entertain that thought.
$100,000.00 for temporary seating, which will become totally useless the following year. This is a big price to pay to have the Cubans send a 4th or 5th rated team to come here and kick our butts. Anyone who thinks that they will send there best players to the middle of nowhere to play ball is just kidding themselves.

As usual Prince George wants to pretend it is on the world stage when in fact it is a very small player in a very large arena.
There's some more positive comments from residents, maybe the organizing committee can put on a great event and put PG on the map for more international events.

This event will bring spectators from all places to this city, these people will be spending money here.

I don't think PG is pretending about anything with this event. Maybe we should change the name of this site to Opinion25No?
Rounder. Its a sad state of affairs when this City Council cannot build and maintain toilets in the downtown area, nor do they seem capable of cleaning u;p the downtown. (They have been paying lip service to this ;problem for years). However they seem to be able to build sports facilities Ťall over the City at a huge cost to taxpayers, all with running water and toilet facilities, and most hardly ever used. The Horseshoe pits, Lawn Bowling, Sports Centre, to name but a few.

Maybe some of these so called sports events who are always calling on the City for funds, should try to operate on their own, and if it doesnt work then get out of the business.

Since when does it become a responsibility of taxpayers to fund every sport event in the City while the City uses the age old argument that people will come to town and spend money. This may be so but the money they spend doesnt make its way back to my pockets to offset my taxes.
If you cant afford it...
Don't do it...
I am tired of paying for the entertainment of others.
If your product is good those who wish to see it will pay the ticket price...
Sawson's ideas are bang on. I would be more than happy to pay to see the Montreal Canadiens in PG. Use the profits from the hockey game to pay for the temporary seating for the baseball tournament.
The city's $100,000.00 might be better spent at the Kin center facilities. Fix the showers, change the sink taps so they both don't turn the same direction, add a few hot water tanks so the hot water does not run out so quickly, and the list goes on. Give the maintenance people at the Kin center the necessary funds to do the job properly.
Well at least the ballpark isn't downtown, out of site out of mind?

I agree the City should be focusing on the problem(s) downtown, but do we really need to provide public washrooms? I may be wrong, but I don't recall seeing City maintained washrooms in downtown Vancouver, Edmonton, Kelowna, Calgary.

Tourist money doesn't make it way back to my pockets either, but it does make it to the ones in that industry. Taxes are a part of life, we don't get to choose where portions of our money go.
Most major Cities have self cleaning public washrooms in their downtown areas. It seems that only Toronto has had any problems, and that was because of the type of system they put in and the location.

People who shop downtown, especially with children need access to facilities. Not all business*s allow you to use their facilities, especially if you are not buying something from them.

The cost to the City for recreational facilities is approx 12 Million per year and rising. You would think that we should be able to shed some of this sports minded mentality and do some things that are more meaningful to a City.

While people may like hockey, baseball, curling, basketball,, soccer, etc; there are other things in life.
