Prince George, B.C.- The design for the new RCMP detachment building for Prince George will be public when the agenda for Monday’s Prince George city council meeting is released.

Leisure Services Manager, Tom Madden, says the design has come together “We will be providing Council with an update on Monday night, and that will include the design.”

The site for the new detachment building is at 4th and Victoria, the block that was once home to a liquor store, a Safeway store, and most recently, the Good Time Bingo Hall.

The project is expected to cost in the $25 to $30 million dollar range and it will be built to the LEED gold standard.

“We expect to start demolition of the existing building on that site to start later this fall” says Madden. That demolition will see crews trying to save some of the large timbers to be recycled for use in the new facility.

If construction started in the spring of 2009, the RCMP won’t likely be able to move in to the new facility until late 2010 as it is expected to take 18 months to complete the project.

As Opinion250 reported in late July, the next step will see the City issue a Request for Proposals for a contractor to join the design and administration team. The contractor will be asked to look at the design and help put the final dollar figures to the construction of the building. That contractor will provide advice on the most cost effective ways to proceed with the building.

Ah, but will it be a harrassment free workplace? NOT
Seems like a good way to assemble a design team.

In the past it was just the architech and some artie types. The result was a soaring monster that just sucked up money and running costs in a big way.

Remember the Big Criminal center on the hill was supposed to cost $20mil and final bill, after tearing off the outer cladding and taking two years longer to finish, came in at $58million. Did you know the bars in the windows in the cells are horizontal rather than vertical as it was believed this would soften the incarcination experience. The building doesn't have any square corners and the roof has 13 different sections that really gave grief to make it drain. The design of this jail was financially irresponsible right from the start.
uuugh 25-30 million means 40-50 million, Rather than have John Major build the additional 6 condo's on the gaming center property(which I will be amazed if it happens), why not get Mr Major to cut us a cheque and then kick a few million of our own money into the pot and convert the gaming center into a new RCMP headquarters.
cobrasnake, your the ideas winner of year. And we could charge the cops for parking in the basement or whatever its called.

When do you think a referendum will be held for the cost of the new cop-shop? Maybe we could have it with the up coming civic election? They will probnably have it when hell freezes over.

Cheers
YAMMA, you did not include the cost of replacing the boilers at the prison a couple of years ago. The dollar value must remain confidential, but I can say that it cost more than you and I will earn in our working lifetime.
metalman.
I suppose it's too late for the location to be changed eh? I would think the old Wood Wheaton site would make more sense. It would've been nice if the current site could've been retained for genuine commercial, downtown residential or a combo of both.

Oh well. It's only another huge block of land in the downtown core that will be tied up with something that does NOTHING to bring people down there.
Yeah, all in all a poor choice of locations in many peoples opinions, but I suppose the fuzz are thrilled that they are getting a new monument oops I mean a new, strictly utilitarian public safety building. The location would better serve us as a retail site, and I think that integrated condos would be a winner too. Think of the tax dollars that would come in to city coffers.
