Candidate to Comply and Remove Signs

Prince George, B.C.- Municipal Council candidate Gregg Kaulk says he will obey the call from City Hall and remove signs that he had placed throughout Prince George.

(The signs, as shown at right, feature a cow standing beside the letter "K")

Although he is complying, that doesn’t mean he agrees with the ruling about his signs. “I think there is some ambiguity in the bylaw” says Kauk.

Under election rules, signs are only allowed during the election period. Kauk says the bylaw doesn’t specify just what the “election period” is. “The bylaws have to be clearer” says the Council hopeful.

He also questions whether his signs can be labelled an election sign as they don’t call for any action by the viewer, rather, they offer a pronunciation guide to his name.

Nevertheless, Kauk says he will have his signs removed by the end of today, as has been requested.

Signs are allowed as of September 30th, the first day for nomination papers to be filed.

I don't knoe how effective they are as a "pronunciation guide". My first thought was "what the hell is (possibly ghey)Cow 1000?"
So this is the bylaw the bylaw dept. decides to enforce?

As far as Mr. Kauk's argument, it's weak at best. Nice try though.
A study should be done to see if the bylaw needs to be re written
Cheap and free! That is all it is. You would have to pay to get yer name out in the public domain. Name recognition. Over and over again. Kinda like memorizing poetry. When you walk into the voters booth, how can you not forget this? Like the old adage goes, "Say anything you want, but spell my name right". Methinks the candidate in question wants to be "in yer face" long before the rest of the posse has their chance.
Very true, Har. The guy has made the media an accomplice in his advertising campaign. Even the fact that we're posting about it is good for him.
I'm not sure ignoring/misunderstanding simple things like a sign bylaw is the way to demonstrate one's fitness for council.

And before you say "there's no such thing as bad publicity," tell that to Michael McCain, President & CEO of Maple Leaf Foods.

But then again, I'm the one that keeps saying all that matters in a civic election is fame.

Too bad, really.
Kauk: “The bylaws have to be clearer.”

OR his interpretation has to be smarter.

OR he should ask/verify as suggested by the Provincial Candidate's Guide.
Mr Kauk ( Cow-K ) has just obtained a couple of grand worth of advertising for the cost of a few paper signs and some sticks. This is a good tactic and is very inexpensive. If he can apply this kind of logic at city hall, he's got my vote. I think right now he probably has a grin bigger than the rim on a slop pail. My hat's off to you Mr. Kauk. Good luck.
IMO all election signs are visual pollution and we have enough of that already!
Smart guy whether he was thinking about it or not. I like it!
I still remember the F-word signs. All that sign talk didn't help Fetterly win the Mayoralty race, nor the council race 3 years later.

Notice too we're not talking about the merits of the candidate, but about his signs. That's not the kind of word of mouth that has legs and will be forgotten about by November 15.
I agree with Lamb, and that's why there are such things as sign bylaws that should be respected, especially by those that hope to be making the rules for the rest of us.
The signs were stupid. We can only hope that Kauk is not., In any event he should have known better. IMO I think it was a waste of time and money. I thought the signs had something to do with the Marathons, or a new breakfast cereal.
By all means, let's enforce the sign bylaw but do it for every group not just selected ones. If memory serves, the city employees union were made to remove their signs from blvds, etc because they were against the sign bylaw. Likewise the BCR employees when the railway was being sold out from under our feet. How about the numerous signs poluting Ferry Ave promoting a tent sale for Brick? Do they not have to obey the sign bylaw also? Let'sget the sign police to take a crash course from the sign police in Quebec.
All Mr Kauk has to do is add the words
"Garage Sale" and the signs can stay up forever it seems! LOL
The sign bylaw applies to everyone. But the bylaw, like most (all?) is a complaint-based system.

If you see a sign that doesn't belong, let city hall know about it. Or if you see a junker on your neighbour's lawn, call bylaw services.

The few times I've dealt with them they have been very prompt.

It's OUR city, after all.
