Prince George, B.C. – The public now has a chance to see the conceptual drawing of the new RCMP facility that will be built on the block between 4th and 5th Avenues at Victoria.

The drawing is part of the report that will be delivered to Prince George City Council on Monday September 5th.

The design is for a three story building that will utilize some of the large beams reclaimed from the existing building on the site. The current plan calls for an emergency operations centre, and some space available for leasing to North District RCMP.   The report says if North District doesn’t need to lease the space, the building will be scaled back to a two story structure.

The project was said to be worth between $25 and $30 million but the final estimate will depend on the final design.

It is expected the project will take two years to complete.

That's interesting. Notice how much room there is on that scaffolding outside for hanging criminals, if the death sentence ever has to be used.

Not much chance of that though. There isn't a single criminal act these days that people find revolving or horrific enough to hang someone over.

Expensive building. For the same money we had an airport runway built that will better serve the city than a new RCMP building. Makes me wonder why all the debate about the airport expansion when cash is so plentiful.
Looks like the architect was smokin' dope when he designed this work of art. Roof lines, wall angles all make for a very expensive building to build and maintain. What ever happened to square brick and timber construction. Easy to build, easy to maintain and lasts forever. Looks like this is the same guy that designed the jail on the hill. Cost us a fortune a few years later to rebuild it, leaks and heat loss a big problem. Guess the big city architects don't know much about winter, snow and heat loss. The trees and shrubs sure look good though.
Wow, our city hall doesn't look that good.

Good job. Just plan for a expansion of vertical space for the future.Make sure that the curved office space and the cell area can expand another three or five storeys.

We just have to convince John and the city to put the new Performing Art center into the New Bingo Hall.

Actually, gitterdun. The big city architects are out of Edmonton, so I am pretty sure that they are fully aware of winter, snow and heat loss.

The architects of the jail is out of Vancouver, and they are two seperate companies.
... so let it be written.... so let it be done.... and it shall be called...

THE FORTRESS !!

"What ever happened to square brick and timber construction."
That is one of the problems w/ the looks of this city, we need design and some imagination, not another square box of brick and timber - just like the 3 little pigs built. I think this looks wonderful. Not sure how anyone can tell from a drawing if this building will leak and lose heat. If they go ahead a build a building like this down town it will really help the eyesore it really is right now. If they built yet another square box I for one, would be very disappointed. Who cares how much it costs - ya' think Kelowna residents freak about all of their nice looking buildings! You want tourism...PG better start lookin' a little "hotter"...
Wow beautiful!! Can I get a job there?

;)
Double duty gallows and solar panels on top.
This is unbeleivable that we should spend 30 million bucks on a cop shop and the design would blow your head off. what will the maintenance cost be? We spend all our tax dollars for the benifit of a few. Lets hope the new council will see things differently.

Cheers
Way Way too Fancy.
Why don't the cops move into the soon to be emptied downtown Casino.
Good location-new building-underground
parking.
What more do you need.
Hey robichal... Wana pay my share of the upkeep? Iam tired of payin for all of these artsey inefficient drug induced designs.
What artsey inefficient drug induced designs? If you are speaking of the casino downtown - it's just a square box w/ a weird entrance way.
"drug induced"?

Do you have some actual, factual information to back up that accusation, Giterdun, or is it just another piece of anti-everything lying bullshorts?
ammonra... No factual info but IMHO you would have to be on something pretty funny in order to dream up this design. By the way I am not against the new police station, just against waisting money.
What does it say about our society when we have such a lavish building for our police and our courts and our arts organizations are housed in the barracks of 2880? They might remind some of the ceremonial and imposing buildings of a police state.
I think such an opinion is anything but humble, Giterdun, quite the reverse, in fact.
Wasting money? Talk to the person who built the casino downtown. I don't agree with North District having space there as they have an almost new building on 5th and Ospika...
Nice looking design, but what are those three shuffled-together box-type buildings doing in front of the grand sweeping arch behind them?

They look like some containers that fell in a heap off a freight train - what is the idea?

Other than that...let's build it! 30 million spread over a projected life time of perhaps 60 years is not too bad a deal!

ammonra... I bow to your superior intelligence. I didn't complete grade five. Obviously you've made it past that.
Huge wide open interior spaces cost a lot of my money to keep heated/cooled whether or not they leak or not.
Why some say it will leak is beyond me. Other than if our city inspectors don't do their jobs.
Brick and stick construction is all the POLICE need. Anything else is only a luxury and a waste.
As a matter of fact we shouldn't give them anything better than new Atco trailers.
The location for it would be great up in the bush behind UNBC. Who do these people think they are that have no problem spending my tax dollars how they see fit?

The priorities in this town are sickening.
Visitors arriving from northbound on Victoria have poor, dangerous, traffic-stopping access to the front parking area on a busy Victoria Street. Where are the traffic engineers?

One box is the shooting range and the other is the squash court.
Where is the Tim Hortons sign? Revolving doors fer the criminals? Feng Shui? I.e. You can see luck go in one door and out the other?
Some people complain about building inspectors not knowing what they are doing - yet we have people here that can tell a building will leak from a conceptual drawing!
Hard to tell until the actual thing is built, but I do like the design, despite hating the location.

We have enough ugly, uninspiring, square blocks in the downtown, I'm glad we won't be getting another. Why anyone would want to see 70's style buildings in 2008 is beyond me. Bring on some nice buildings for our downtown. It's LONG overdue.
The idea of having the cop shop in the Chancs building has merit, but I am not sure there is enough parking. It seems that every person employed by the RCMP has to have their own personal vehicle. Bu most of them take them home after their shift, so maybe it isn't an issue.
I must be really stupid, but for the life of me, Giterdun, I can't understand what the grade you reached in school has to do with your accusing someone of using drugs.
This new police station will show once and for all how stupid and fiscally irresponsible, the Politicians, and some others in Prince George really are.

This will be the third brand new police station built in Prince George in the last 50 years. One on Seventh Ave where the new bingo, casino centre is now located. Built sometime around 1957. Two the present location on 8th and Brunswick, and Three the latest to be built at 4th and Victoria.

You would be hard pressed to find any City in Canada who has built 3 new police stations in a 50 year period. People outside of the City when they hear about this kind of crap think that the City is being run by a bunch of idiots, and they may very will be right.

Welcome to the Serangeti on the North.
Palopu, #3, would be the new RCMP facility at 5th and Ospika, #4 will be the one at 4th and Victoria! And you are right, all in the last 50 years!!

And robichal, why brick and timber construction, the 70's square look???? Because it is less expensive to build and maintain!!! It is a jail with an RCMP detachment, attached!!! It should look like a damn jail, and it shouldn't be built downtown!!

This city council has to be shown the door, and never be allowed to return again. They truly are idiots, and have no concept of good fiscal management!!

And as for you ammonra, it seems like you are only on this sight to start an argument!!
The 5th/Ospika facility is not a City Police facility.

1958 to 2008? We still have the same office, retail recreation, industrial, institutional and residential spaces and the same number of bridges. No increase in the area of the City and no increase in the population. Why would the City Police need additional space over that time period?
Gus. Good question. Its all about City Planning,(Job security) Spending taxpayers dollars, Contracts, etc; Heaven forbid that we should reduce spending, and reduce taxes, and maybe reduce the number of people on the City payroll.

A simple renovation of the present police station for approx 5 million would be more than sufficient to look after the needs of the police.

It seems the City wants to relocate the police, and maybe tear down the building to make way for the Performing Arts Centre. They will also tear down the Playhouse Theatre even though they just finished some ex;pensive renovations a few years ago. This will force the users of the playhouse to use the new PAC, and allow the City to sell the Playhouse property to some developer.

We never find out what exactly is going on at City hall until it is a done deal.
"A simple renovation of the present police station for approx 5 million would be more than sufficient to look after the needs of the police"

Where is the report that confirms this? That would be an interesting read.
Maybe some of you esteemed experts should step up for once if you think you can do a better job.

I don't love our city council by any stretch but this one is a step towards some improvement in our downtown core. It's certainly a lot better than the brick and stick outdated throwback the RCMP currently resides in, in an overcrowded and worn out state, with vehicles parked all over the place.

When outsiders see we're willing to invest in neccessities with some vision and architecure with interesting curb appeal, we might actually get some other development in our core that benefits the whole city.
