7 Million Could Be Better Spent Than On Trails

It really doesn’t matter how the 7 million dollars is obtained for trails in the city, the bottom line is that it will cost an additional $200,000 dollars to maintain them and that should be reason to hold off on any development.

The City is tossing around the idea of going to referendum to see if the voters like the idea of borrowing the 7 mill, which would be spent over a period of several years.

They also would like to see some other sources tapped for some of the money. There also was a suggestion at the Council meeting this week that they could go the way of the reverse petition, in other words if not enough people sign a petition to stop the money being borrowed it goes ahead. It is a neat way of getting what you want without seeking permission from the taxpayers.  The only down side to that idea is that this is an election year and if the citizens got word of how the city might do the deal, a few heads would roll on the Council table.

The Council should be taking a look around before spending yet more money developing more trails. Our approaches into the city are terrible at best. We have wide spaces entering the city from all directions that look very drab and certainly not inviting and if the plan is to build trails and the tourists will flock here to use them, the people that came up with that idea need a reality check.

Our welcome to Prince George signs and maintenance  of them are awful. If we are going to spend some money, then let’s start by making the city appear to be a nice neat little city instead of pressing ahead with yet more trails that will cost more money to maintain while we continue to allow the basics to fall by the wayside.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

It would be nice if council could show some fiscal restraint. It appears that they sure like to spend money and then raise our taxes to cover it. We need a conservative council who does not want to add to the beauracracy or to the tax burden.
Fix the darn roads instead. Period!
Do not borrow money for any reason!! Trails in my opinion is not a priority!! They will just get destroyed by the ATV'S that do not seem to give a damn one iota on where they ride. If you think for one minute that trails will bring tourism then you are illuding yourself. Do something about our local gas stations who are NOT reducing the price of gas/litre!! This will help tourism!! You want to make trails then have fundraisers to earn the money!! Let the people VOTE!!! DO NOT BORROW MONEY FOR STUPID THINGS!!!
Fix the welcome signs.....yah....there's a way to draw more people to our community! at least trails give the citizens a healthy way to get out and exercise or just relax, and just might add to the tourist draw (I doubt it but that benefit to citizens is large).

Give your head a shake folks. Trails are the most used recreation facility in our City bar none.

Whether you personally use them or not really doesn't matter. Let it go to referendum...the people will speak...we shall see.
"Trails are the most used recreation facility in our City bar none. "

They are? More than the Rotary Soccer Fields? More than the hockey rinks? More than the softball fields? I find this hard to believe.

The only people needing to shake their heads are those who think spending 7.5M + 200K yearly to maintain a trail system is a good idea.
Trails are used quite a bit, I know because I use them and see the large amount of people on them. The sad thing though is atv's destroying them. The atv's leave deep ruts making it quite difficult to walk and bike.
Exactly MrPG.
Does anyone really think people are going to flock to our city because we will have great trails? Think again.

Seamutt where exactly are these destroyed trails you are talking about?
One of the reasons I moved to PG and specifically to my neighborhood were the trails. I'm sure other folks have moved here making similar decisions.

It's actually one of the things PG has going for it...
let’s start by making the city appear to be a nice neat little city.

And some people dont even bother to cut their lawn or fix a broken fence

In the bowl area each neighbourhood is close enough to the peremiter of the city for a nice nature walk. Moores Meadow is just a wonderfull place for a walk. The city wanted to move in and fix it all up but thank god enough people told them to leave it as it is and furtunatley they did .

On the other side of the bowl is the Ginter property. The city screwed it up and ran a water line across it. They all but destroyed the naturl ambience of the property.Still hundreds of people each week walk there.
From the end of Ferry all the way over to 22nd Ave. There is a natural trail beat out by many foot prints over the years by people that love to walk. In the fall the old Ginter building site is alive with with the colour of the birch tree. The City has not spent a penny on these trails.

There are many quite deserted areas readily accesable within the city for a walk by cutting through a park and existing walkways. Most of us are happy with this arrangement. People will find what they need they dont need to be told were to go.

Cheers
Can't our "HEALTHY" provincial and federal govs give up some tax bucks for this?
Maybe the trails should be user pay. A simple once a year fee to offset the cost of maintenance. This would be more in line with people that use the kin center. You don't get to go on the ice for free.

Or simply the city could concentrate on pot holes and maintaining city streets.

Time for a new council who can rein in some of these lavish spending habits.

Remember if you want someone new on council vote for them only. Ticking off one or more of the incumbents also just cancels your vote for the new blood.

You moved to PG because of the trails?
Ditto from me, lost, that does seem like a strange reason to choose a city to live in. Hey, I guess I ain't seen it all yet.
metalman.
Trails are a great Idea. Hopefully they all link up streaching through some nice areas. Including maybe a coble stone street downtown with shopping and a few places to have a beer on an outdoor patio. Somewhere you can sit outside, soak up the sun, have a coffee, watch people go by. Then continue on your ride.
oh wait I must be dreaming?

Trails are a great idea and maybe a start.

If you want people to come and stay in PG you have to crack down on all the scumbags that leave their property unkept and garbage riden.
From my experience that would be asking to much from the bylaw department.
Have the city remove all unoperable vehicles from residential lots throughout the city and sell them to the scap yards.

Have the city Remove garbage from residential lots and dispose in recycle scap yards for cash.

Fine all the rest of the property owners for unkept properties.

Viola, There is no reason we couldnt get 7 million dollars by doing these things. Look around this city it shouldnt be a problem.
